Tips for planning this include:

1. If you're not sure how things should work, use history. Then, use logic.

2. The player's character could be captured.

Gah, couldn't find the article. Ok so in the game Risen II they swear allot (and use sexist, racist and orientation based remarks) and the critic was mildly disappointed that there was no sense of criticism or complaint about so in the game by the pirate characters. (Now I agree that such words are rather unnecessary, but the critic expected the pirates to have some sort of offence to their remarks(Pirates in general lacked morals) I don't think that the pirates should act like "uh oh, did someone say something offensive, but I also think that Deep Silver shouldn't of added 'em). I guess the point was that the critic expected a pirate-based game to have some morals when using such words.

Edit: found it! http://www.destructoid.com/review-risen ... 5653.phtml

"One can argue that these characters are steeped in a world of piracy and such ignorance is expected, of course, though the fact that the comments are regularly presented in a matter-of-fact manner, with absolutely no sense of criticism or complaint, and sometimes come from the hero's own mouth, remains faintly alarming. "At times, things are so imbalanced as to be totally demoralizing. Risen 2 cruelly sets the player up to fail"

I love that line. If only this was more common. Hopefully chris aims with something similar in Kenshi. It still feels too easy to become a god at times; but of course thats all just balance work.

I think the problem with that is once you can actually defend yourself, you can just kill and kill and kill xD so your attack raises too fast..at least for me :P

Yep, the critical threshold. Once my defense hit a natural 30 I went from barely surviving even with guard help to taking down whole roaming bandit squads alone. This is in my current single character save. With a bunch of guys it is even easier. Skills do level too quickly. But we have buildings and training may get implemented soon; with these options it becomes more likely that Chris will slow down skill growth considerably so that it will be a much more gradual and subtle game.

That is why I love the Gothic/Risen series.(and indie games) its very cruel at times, but after getting smacked about I get to be even worse. (That author should've stuck to playing farmville.)

I never played Risen and the first 2 gothic games drove me mad because of their relative user unfriendliness. Having said that I found Gothic 3 to be very nice (I can use the mouse finally). Punishment and gradual development can be fun when there is a way to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. But of course you need to be careful of unnecessary game padding and things that get in the way of the fun. Its a very fine balancing act that you can never make perfect for everybody. I must say I don't envy Chris's position with having to shoulder everything himself; but at least there won't be any ambiguity with the design choices.

EDIT: Oh yes, I do like that picture. Just started playing DF again today and I am just as good as ever. (Which is to say that I can't get any worse. Even youtube tutorials confuse me)

I love DF, it's the first indie game I played and lead me into this wonderful world of developers that give a damn.

Gothic 2 had the ability to climb/create an army of skeletons and get high.
Risen is exactly like the Gothic series. (Piranha bytes (Original Gothic creator)ditched Jowood and teamed up with Deepsilver to create Risen) Risen has a very small game map,but very satisfying experience.

Blzx, use the Mayday version of DF, the icons look very nice (trees are trees and dwarfs are dwarfs).DF has the same controls, but with Mayday version you can tell what the objects are. I love DF, but it seems that my people keep mysteriously dying or randomly going postal.

I like mayday version for df, helps a lot to learn play the game. But i've been recently more into the ascii graphics  , i played t.o.m.e. for psp (think .nethack meets lord of the rings) and that's also in ascii, so i started playing df in ascii and it's kind of cool too now.

After playing vanilla df for a long time, you get a big shock when you go back to AAA graphics

You should always proofread carefully to make sure you didn't any words out.

I never actually got into Fortress mode. I did enjoy the Adventure mode but the last version of that I played was just to tough. Plus it still didn't have non human towns to buy small items at.
Get a job to kill a bandit leader.
Recruit three companions.
March.
One companion dies of stupidity minimum. Camel kick, chasing beavers off a waterfall, picking a fight with a giant badger, drown attacking carp, etc.
Get there and the bandits have at least a dozen guys(couldn't fast travel or be ambushed by worse bandits).
Even if I kill the minions the leader is a super soldier.
Lure super soldier to giant badger if lucky.

That was my horrible attempt at virtual sarcasm, probably should've used quotes for mysteriously and randomly. The way my DF society operates, it is not surprising when a dwarf goes postal or a ghost decides to batter them.

The vanilla DF fast rivers look awesome with ascii graphics. (it reminded me of the green code from the Matrix (If you disregard the fact that the green code in the Matrix was either Katakana or Hiragana, but just backwards.))

you are right. Even more because there are no slaves in df.

I hope we can decide on names for our slaves later  I like having useful slave-names.

I think they should have names to start off with, simulated by randomly making names when they are put into slavery for faction troops or other npcs that are just called what they are... Unless there are plans to already do this for all npc's.

Obviously they have names beforehand, but i mean having the possibility to change those names. eg I just enslaved some random dude named "Shino" and then i change his name to "Miner number 4"

Good idea. Or at the very least put them into named groups.
