Hi.
I play with kenshi in totaly about 40-50 hours, and like with all games, i read the list of features, but i think there are MANY thing i have no idea about.I read quite a few forums, guides etc.But i have no idea about a few things.
One, how can i play in cities ?I know i can buy buildings, and i can build a few things in-on them, but is there a way one can make a living in a town/city on their own, without having to regularly buy and sell stuff ?For example, now i have to buy iron plates to forge weapons, which i sell and buy book and whatever i need.Is there anything i can do-build to make money without having to depend on traders ?Also, is it better to have a counter shop in a town than having it in an own settlement which is far away from everything ?Also,is it possible to build anything in a settlement that is owned by a faction in any way?It would seem to make sense to buy something, demolish it, and build something instead of that place, but i guess it's not possible yet.Or something similar is possible like buying all the building and you gain control over the settlement and be able to build freely ?
Two,prisoners. What can i do with them? Can i make them work or recruit them in any way?I read you can trick-recruit people by giving them to the holy nation as prisoner or something like that, but that sounded to much of a work for me,so i'm not really interested in that method. Can i sell them ?I read that someone is using them to train, which sounds awesome, and will surely try it out,but i'd like to know more about them.
This is all for now, i'm waiting for your replies.
List of features ?
I don't know how to play in cities.
I tried once, but the power I generated went into the city grid, and i couldn't use it to power my crafting stations, so I gave up.
I've also never had anyone buy anything from a shop counter I owned, so I can't speak to that either. Generally, though, money isn't an issue in this game once you get going.
No way to gain control of a settlement.
You can usually build pretty close to a city, though, which can be handy.
I haven't used prisoners much, but I don't think you can make them work. I -am- starting to use some captured Broken Skeletons to train with, though. You want to use Rusted Junk weapons and give both sides the best armor possible, so that they whale away on each other as long as possible.

I tried living in cities when I started out and quickly discovered that cities are good for only two things - buying and selling stuff.
I am trying to get a house up and running in Mongrel now, though. Electricity can be generated by small wind generators which you can build on your roof(it also lets you build them right inside your house but I assume this will be fixed at some point) or generators that you need fuel for. Which leads to the main reason you cannot maintain a house when you have just started a new game - hydroponics is waaay too high-tier tech and without it you cannot grow anything in cities.
TL;DR - to have a viable base in a city you need hydroponics, then you can have food and at least some crafting potential as you still have no access to iron and copper. You will still need water but building 4-5 wells close together outside a city and hauling water to your house once in 10 days is not that bad.
P.S. Growing Hydroponic Hemp and crafting Tangelmusts right in the middle of a large city sounds really tempting though.

You don't need hydroponics to buy fabric or other raw materials from a merchant and convert them into something expensive.
And if you can craft something worthwhile, you can just buy food in cities.
Did you get to use your own power, by the way? Maybe they fixed that; when I tried, I couldn't use my power/batteries in Mongrel.

The last time i used a city i was able to power things in my building by using Wind generators.Roccandil wrote:You don't need hydroponics to buy fabric or other raw materials from a merchant and convert them into something expensive. And if you can craft something worthwhile, you can just buy food in cities.

but its been a couple weeks(if not months) since i actually played .
But yeah the only use i found for cities is a relatively secure safe house. so if things go bad at the base either due to something in a mod being to strong for you to deal with, or simply being over whelmed by repeated attacks then resting in the towns comes off better.
which is mostly what i used cities for the last time i played using the Foot Ninja mod.
but i also built a base near one of the Shek cities building in the desert -.- some of the Shek Chosen patrol groups kept attacking my troops >.< followed by the occassional dogs. which meant waiting for people to heal a lot. when things started to get really bad in the wounds department i just used the shek city as a resting point since the Shek Chosen don't seem to go in the city...which made it safe...eventually i started enslaving the Chosen! >.>
Currently i have a full skeleton party so i don't have to worry about food.So i was wondering how can i make food for future parties in cities, but for now i'm okay with a full skeleton party, then can get something started, then later i might recruit other humans with stuff so they can build a new settlement without problems.
So there's no way for me to build iron refinery right ?Becuase if i could in The Hub it would be easy to get by.There is a huge iron mine IN one of the ruined houses, that is what i'm currenty exploiting.(This should stay in the game for an easy and fun experience.)
As for power,i could use the citie's power, but i didn't need it so far.I build a forge on the roop of a building, and it works, the hub has more than enough energy for my little forge,i mine iron, sell it and buy iron plates which i turn into weapons, as the skill goes up they become more valuable,so working as a smith in the hub is really nice way to build up lot of money and base skills for skeleton for free, since they don't need food.
As for the prisoner question....so i can't do anything with them.Only keep them in the cages and train with them ?(I guess alter canabalism will be implented and slave trading since the research says"we must be care not to go on a wrong path",which is very cool)

Used to have several city games on the old map. On this one I have two.
Basically when you create power it goes to the city grid but you also get to suck power from the city grid. So you don't actually need to build power sources right away.
City life is a merchant's life. it's all about buying and selling. buy things craft them into something more valuable and then sell them. Booze was always my best thing. Buy wheatstraw and use a still to make rum. I even had a game on the old map with a house in every city, and a wandering trader who would gather the rum from the cheap places and take it to better markets.
It's a very different game play then the wandering nomad. but that is the special nature of Kenshi. There are soo many different ways to play it.
On the new map I have a thief game who goes to other cities and steals things then returns home to sell them and builds up his house at home. He has 4 robot guards at home that don't need food so they are very reliable.
I also have a small band of raiders who raid HN farms and mines. They have several bases in several towns including an outbuilding on a now deserted HN farm. They move from town to town as the HN patrols dictate.

Well,i solved the issue....i moded the game so iron refineries are not both interior and exterior furniture, and i added two smaller windmills to the town's addition,so i always have enough power. This should be added to the full game, but whatever i dont feel this as cheating so i'll probably do the same in the full game. Now i can mine the ore in the hub and turn it into iron plates, and forge weapons from those, some worth 3-4thousands

My current main newlands save got it's start mining copper just outside mongrel and at first selling, then later crafting it. Was pretty fun.swillo wrote:Used to have several city games on the old map. On this one I have two.
