I have a pretty crappy group of people with a shack with a research bench i just got back from hunting down greenfruits for the brand new farm. i make the farm and save turn my camera around and theres 70 hungry bandits they annihilate my team, loot them and just stand around until all my guys bleed out and die i dont even have walls yet ive tried locking myself into the shack before they get to me but they just break the doors down and camp inside the shack when im outside they walk away a little and walk back so if i get up from playing dead they just cut me in "twine"

This is where the new play dead and crawl away feature is supposed to help.
Have not tried it yet. So good luck.

Hire mercs.
Have them help you hold or boot out the current occupiers.

Then hire more people for your squad or get current ones trained up to be able to handle and defend your base.

Over 9000 huingry bandits.

Seriously though, it's not a good idea to try and defend your shack on your own early in the game, you should train your guys a bit first. The other option could be to construct some walls, build some tall building nearby your gates, tower preferably, very close to the wall, and place some turrets on the roof, so someone could shoot those intruders.

Also with the newer hold system you could try and hold your ground inside the shack, to deal with bandits in smaller quantities.

Recently i've managed to repel the Holy attack with only about a dozen of moderately trained people placed tactically at the narrow passage. So maybe you could too.

Hah! yeah first building I built earlier this week, exact same thing happened, first I got visited by a trader, so I bought some stuff off them, but you get a little bar flash "trader on the way to your outpost", so I had some warning. I too had no defences or fences up. next came the holy warrior crew looking to get me to pray (prey?) or something, I basically treated them like I treat the local Mormons, I ran off and hid in HUB town (I have all my training equipment in town at a couple of buildings, and a lot of power and some crafting stations to keep others busy if there is a raid going on at the outpost. )

Other thing I do, is everyone is on "stealth" while at the outpost, they can mine stealthily , operate the machinery, and even work the forge and garden all in stealth mode. If I see that warning "incoming bandit raid on outpost" or "holly warrior crew coming to convert" everyone is packed up and moved on up to town to work on other stuff. Stealth is handy at night if you get a bunch of "dusties" (bandits) wander through your camp. I don't mind these little crews, as I have 7-9 followers and they need to work out their sword arms and take some damage, these little wandering raids are ideal to increase toughness while farming.

Remember, hit space (freezes the action), un stealth everyone, and have them converge on the action, and have a few beds ready for fast healing. I found its easier to keep the research benches in town as well, and to buy a bigger house, either the big bug house next to the bar (hub) or the square one next to it. I keep the two garage sized ones for storing training stations. Chuck a few smaller power windmills on the roof, some battery banks and you have plenty of power to use in town.

I also found its a good idea to drop more than one well and some tanks around your farm fields, dead centre, you can distribute water as you farm (if you have the room in your inventory). Because crappy farming seems to fail on the best stuff (cotton) I found it easier to upgrade all the fields first, so you need about 60 or everything. I ran trips to other towns, bought extra supplies and ran them back (as well as lots of books) I funded this with trips to the copper nodes next to the hub, where I would fill everyone up to the max (while they are in stealth mode) then haul it all back and sell it. this funds the trips to town, and most towns have a copper node near by you can farm( all while bandits raid your outpost) when you get back, if your lucky several groups ran into each other (had this happen a couple of times) and you can loot the gear and make a few more credits..

The game will tell you when the "Raid at your outpost has finished" but I noticed it doesn't always mean everyone leaves, I will send my fastest runner down to take a peek from a distance to see if anyone is still down there, and only return when the coast is clear.

Hope that helps.

Don't worry about wealth in Kenshi, you can always make more wealth later and elsewhere, just abandon it and maybe come back later when you can kick their asses.
