After quite a bit of leveling i think i finally assembled a squad that might be able to outmatch a town and its guardians (Or at least kill a shopkeeper or two before running to the hills screaming for mercy). However i keep wondering - and a search cannot seem to answer - do shopkeepers actually re-spawn, or can i end up completely annihilating a town's traders permanently?

If its the latter i guess I'd be better of leaving the town alive, or at least select a town i never ever go otherwise. Anyone knowns? :)

I have cleared few towns and no. No one respawns. At least I haven't seen any respawning they are all still empty, it's of course possible that the time for it is so long I haven't seen it but I think not. If you want the city back you can import squad.

Thanks - i think ill leave them alive then. Import squad has worked wonders in the past, but i finally build a nice base for myself which (i believe) doesn't import along in a new game. Having said that i could imagine leveling a little longer, annihilating every town, starting a new game and selling the loot. The loot 2-3 towns should be sufficient to offset the entire cost for a base (Not counting building time and the time it takes to purchase all the materials).

Yap. The loot will be epic. Just one town might have 2 clothes shops, armor shop, weapon shop, 2 hat shops etc. and you can just change backpacks with them to get all from them. And I have already stopped looting the guards because I can't sell all my loot anywhere. All shopkeepers run out of money or space and all my men are bursting with expensive stuff

Thankfully chris has implemented my temporary solution to that problem.

Every 20 or 30 minutes (not sure if this is affected by the speedup button) shopkeepers will reset their inventory. This gives them more space to buy your stuff. They might also have better weapons for sale, although that depends on how many guys you have and what weapons you already have.

Really? That could be a problem. Stick it in the bug forum and chris might get onto it. This was only a temporary solution anyway so he should be willing to magically create some money out of nowhere.
