Harder enemies?

At the moment I have a group of 9 characters (had 10 but due to roleplay reasons I had to let one of my best fighters go and re-join her people after the fall of the HE) and I have a few questions I hope I can get some answers too …
1, My 9 characters each have around 40-50 att/def and weapons skills and with decent armour I was easily able to walk into each of the Holy Empire cities and slaughter all the guards/soldiers with little or no damage to my own people... I was amazed at how my small group were slaughtering Paladins and High Paladins with such ease that it sort of took away the sense of accomplishment - So the question is = are there harder opponents/enemies out there or at level 40/50 skills I have reached end game (which seems rather sad as it gives no incentive to continue if everything will be a cakewalk - and where are the armies with gangs of 70+ skill fighters ? ) ?
- I have read the SE corner of the map has some high-level enemies, but again I have checked the stats of them and they are around 40-50 skills, making them on par with Paladins... its like I have less than 50 skills and already nothing can challenge me, I just want the feeling back of taking my small group and having the fear that a group I meet could kick my ass, instead of knowing my average trained squad has no fear of anything - Why is the skill capped at 100 when 50 is more than enough to take on anything in the game with relative ease?
2, I have increased squad size/squad numbers to 2x to try and give some challenge but still ends up a slaughter fest for the poor Holy Nation guards/paladins... Any other tweeks I can make? Maybe turn it to 3x squad size?
3, Mods - I have the 3x combat slots, cannibals/screaming bandits expansion, but looking for mods to actually make some of the enemy armies be a challenge (I feel there should be high-level roaming Paladin or Samurai squads with 70+ stats rather than the game becoming a cake walk as soon as you have 40-50 skills, less than half the max level)
Any mods people recommend to make the enemies tougher ? or is 40-50 skill the real end game?
All advice appreciated.
