Now with the new weight system, i really want to address the difficulty in managing supplies and inventory between your characters and buildings. Previously, i was one of those folks who used a shopkeepers backpack (was an exploit, of course) but now that we cant do this it really highlights the difficulty in the current system. Right now its a massive hassle to move individual medkits around in a building storage chest with no stacking and it takes so much effort its not even worth it to attempt to manage. And of course, theres the fun of managing every characters inventory, further impeded by the inability to open two character inventories side by side, you always need to use a storage/corpse (or risk your items bugging below the map by dropping them) to transfer stuff. And its all done individually, with the player inventory tetrising it up.
I seriously suggest throwing out the current inventory system for a list based system thats easier to manage for the player and that will save all of our wrists and fingers. In addition, the AI and npcs will work far better with this kind of inventory system as AI is very bad at playing inventory tetris. The list could be limited by volume the same way it is now, it just wouldn't be represented on a grid. The tetris part of the weapon/equip slots could be replaced by equip types that only allow fragment axes, etc in the proper slot too.
If not, then perhaps stacking can be used a little more extensively, especially in storage chests for instance. Also, right now there doesnt seem to be any reason to use weapon stands or armor storages over regular chests. Perhaps they should get the ability to stack up to 10 weapons in return for a smaller grid?

Ok, I have increased it to 10x stacking.
I don't plan on ditching the inventory, but I do plan to have:
1- Pack mules, they can carry loads and be ordered to travel and auto collect/deliver stuff
2- A big logistics window where you have all your storage windows and a character or two in one screen.
Hows that?

Well, you've got my approval. Do you mean literal Mules?Chris_The_Great wrote:Ok, I have increased it to 10x stacking.

Eh? you can trade items beetween two characters with both inventory opened , select first character then right right click second and select "Loot"Mattk50 wrote: And of course, theres the fun of managing every characters inventory, further impeded by the inability to open two character inventories side by side, you always need to use a storage/corpse (or risk your items bugging below the map by dropping them) to transfer stuff. Oh wow, i was completely unaware of this.Jin wrote:Eh? you can trade items beetween two characters with both inventory opened , select first character then right right click second and select "Loot"
I cant really give feedback on the pack mules or logistics window until they are ingame to see how they work, but they do sound like they will help the issue out a lot. And the 10x stacking in storage should make things much easier for the time being too.Chris_The_Great wrote:Ok, I have increased it to 10x stacking.

A few other thoughts, clicking and dragging to select multiple items to move would actually be a big help with this, im surprised it didnt occur to me when writing the OP. Because weapons and stuff can have odd shapes though, i forget where i saw this used before but in that game clicking and dragging would only select what you entirely contain in the drag area, rather than the standard behavior of it selecting everything it touches e.g. windows 7. Also will the AI be able to sort through their inventories and maximize space easily in the future?
Thanks for the feedback on my feedback :v
Dare I say shift-clicking?
I don't know how easy that would be to implement either, so I'm not demanding this but shift-clicking inventory into your characters own pack would make life easier for looters and would-be bandits.
It can get draining when you decimate a bandit group, only to have to drag each individual item one at a time into the player inventory. Shift clicking at least means you can just click the items once and they'll try to fit into the inventory as best they can.
When something doesn't fit though, that's when players should have to manually rearrange everything to try and make it fit - kinda like real life when you run out of space in a bag.
Again, this is just an idea, and as it's been stated the pack mule may end up being like this if it auto-collects in the future.

You can already ctrl click stuff to have it move between inventories (its a bit unreliable though, sometimes sends it to your inventory, sometimes to the storage, from both directions too). Despite this, it is still very tedious (as of this update) and i was very concerned at inventory management down the line when we have shops and an entire faction to run. Chris seems to have some plans for that though
Also, shift clicking atm is for moving entire stacks in one go.
