Locking a door does...

What exactly? I have started building my small outpost, near an existing city, really, just so i can work on research while i make money and gather mercs. I put a research table in the small shack, left my science guy in there, and locked the door on the way out for my other two to scavenge. After making a trip to town to sell my ill gotten loot, i noticed my science guy was knocked out, and immediately flew over to see what was going on, and two bandits were walking out the front door like they had a key!

Is it just an rp thing at the moment, so you can lock your doors before you leave the house?

If the behavior hasn't changed in the last updates, then locking a door should keep enemies outside. They'll start hitting the door to break in, but that takes a lot of time.

What happened in your case probably is that you didn't tell your science guy to "defend" or "stay" which means that when the enemy got within sight/radius your own guy actually unlocked and opened the door to go smack the bandits.

Next time, tell him to "stay" and don't forget to check sometimes while roaming the desert to see if there are bandits trying to break in.

Ah you're right, i didnt tell him to stay.

On that subject, how do you tell what commands of that type that someone has? it'd be intuitive if the selected one was a lighter or darker color than the others, but as of right now, it doesnt appear to function like that.

Like for most alpha versions, most features you see are not fleshed out yet. If you are not sure, just tell him to stay again ;)

Is locking the door just closing the door?

No. Right clicking and "lock"ing the door is actually locking the door.
