how do i join the army????

Unfortunately, you are not currently allowed to become a member of any preexisting faction. You can, however, follow one of the many merchants or roaming bands of warriors wandering the desert. However, when they are attacked, if you are incapacitated, don't expect them to heal you.

So before you join the army, bring a friend along! They'll keep you alive when the army won't, and that way you can both get better together, to the point where you won't need to travel with the army anymore.

So you just right click/action then select bodyguard and you fallow them around and get in a lot of fights to get better?

Yes, although you might be better off finding enemies on your own and then running back to the army dudes. Waiting around for the regular army guys to find them is pretty slow.

Probably the biggest plus to this is selling the swords and gear you pick up off the corpses.
I ended up selling enough to start my own little town.
But the weapons and armor are currently the largest source of income for me. Mostly because currently "squads" are too small to start a good town for income.

Building training dummies and setting guys up to train on them for long periods of time help you out a lot.

You just need to hone in on one thing to start making at your village, to sell. That's going to be pure profit, and basically everything sells for more than weapons do, like bread.

Can also level up your combat a bit in relative safety by checking police stations, some of them have training dummies you can get your combat up a bit with. Following that, find a dead guy, weigh yourself down to 'heavy' with a combination of his gear and his corpse, then run laps within the city to raise your strength.

Another thing I found interesting to do is just make a small outpost, and start the town out, when you have researched enough to have a shop front, make it in a Saloon, and put an item in it, sooner or later a merchant convoy will come along and pretty much "Patrol" Shop for things to buy. Unfortunately shopping hasn't been implemented yet, so they just kinda do laps around your outpost. This is kinda like your own little Outpost guard, and when a group of bandits stubble upon your base, you can have the caravan guard help you in the fight, just keep your medic indoors till everything is bleeding and left leg twitchy. Also, Invest in beds, as soon as you make your first large house. FILL IT with beds. This way you don't have to carry people all the way back to town to heal them fast.

While I am on the subject of towns, It seems I might be having some issues with building, I have researched everything from the Research lab II and cannot build and outpost, I know I heard something about walls being taken out of the game for a bit, but I didn't see anything about outpost, is this a bug, or am I just missing something.

I actually just go with one bed in the shack, next to the first research desk. sure it's a little slower than having everyone sleep it all off at once, I can get more production done by rotating people out of bed, and since their efficiency doesnt drop if they're injured, everything's good

Yeah I really think they should fix it to were if you have a damaged Limb it is less efficient to work at certain facilities, or if you have a damaged head, working at the research station is less efficient.
