It appears that there may be random enemy spawn locations. I was vigilant in my scanning around my settlement when all of a sudden there were enemies upon me. I should have seen them coming unless they spawned out of thin air. Perhaps small enemy encampments could be used as spawn points.
Enemies would spawn from one encampment until it is defeated. If an encampment survives untouched for a period of time, they could send out a creator spawn to form a new encampment somewhere else, therefore an army could grow if not completely wiped out.

This is what I thought they were going for in the long run with the faction system. I kind of thought Chris had intentions to go this direction later. Of course, just random spawns are easier to start with, so likely that is why it works this way currently. If this isn't the intended course of the game, it really would make the game world more alive to see this happen. Also, it would teach people to not be super isolationists, focusing on their one settlement, and ignoring the map for hundreds of days. Then they see that ... gasp... a bandit army is heading their way.... if only they were stopped earlier.
I like this idea... if anything it could start as a basic transition, just make "mob spawners" for now, in this case it would probably be like a tent for a small bandit camp. This would just pop out new bandits every X so often, and once destroyed it wouldn't make any more. But then of course, this means the spawners would just spawn randomly... until the next phase of the AI was implemented with a migration and expansion AI. Now that I am thinking about this, these sorts of things would have to come AFTER the 64x upgrade, since there will be alot of things going on off screen across the map.

In the year 2065 the amount of cat pics on the internet will eclipse the amount of porn pics.
