Who are we paying for researching technology?

It kind of takes from the experience as a whole when we pay an imaginary entity to research technology. Surely there is a more immersing way to implement a financial hit to the player when he wants to research the next technology level. Most likely would be trading for/buying ideas, then researching the ideas. This would also impose a disposition upon the payer to explore the world looking for new ideas and technology.

You do not pay any research, unless you buy blueprints from the faction which did the research. But if you do by yourself, or once you do, you researching it, you not paying anything, tho if you mean you should start from somewhere and not from the air, there is a different story, and there some topics on feature requests you can find about it, if is the second one i kinda also dislike it, needs more "dificulty"

Yes you do pay for research on some items...it costs 2,000 Cats to get Level 2, it costs 3,000 for Level 3....i think it was 10,000 cats for level 5
It is charged out of your clan account once you start it at a bench

I think it's alright to pay some cats for research. Gotta pay for those lab rats, substances, coffee, ... to do some research

I would love to see cost for running a bench, but I dont like it in Cats, its a fine place holder....but using up Stone Rocks to perfect Stone Mining or Processing etc.
Or maybe make a new resource, like paper and ink that you can craft, find or buy

Hey that stereotyping! Besides I don't drink coffee, just chocolate malt...and maybe with some coffee swiss roll.....and strawberry swiss roll. I just can't decide so I ate both.
I guess paying money for research is a shortcut to simplify the system. We could still suggest to Chriss for a future update to change the research system for it to consume money and/or materials. In my opinion with closest concept I think like in FF9 or FF10 equip and weapon crafting, perhaps the need of specific materials like paper or rare ores, gems, timber...etc, so that you need to build a proper economy and travel a lot to gather stuff for research.
Just like in the real world...can't really do steel and electrical discoveries without the industrial and agricultural revolution...at least not extensively...

I like to think of it as the cost of consumables when undertaking a major research project. Sure, you can spend some time and draw up some plans for item storage boxes -- that's an easy problem, and one that is essentially free to solve. But if you want Old Soldier to go and figure out how to build advanced machinery and multiple-story structures, sooner or later you have to give him a budget.

Thats fine, I would just rather see the "budget" bet materials, not coin......even if the materials are something you could just buy in a town with coin.....but also a way to create it yourself.

I think that may be a placeholder. According to a message put out by chris on steam, new biomes are in the works.
Early on chirs mentioned building bases in new dangerous areas in order to access certain research topics. Combine this with the fact that the hat trader sign has a gas mask, and we get the impression that some places are going to be super dangerous.
But yeah, having different research materials to acquire(like a research resource) would definitely fix the research system.
