As far as I know, the Blueprints for the Drifter's Armor pieces are non-functional at this point. You can buy them, learn them, but you cannot craft them. I believe this was also covered in another forum.

Drifters armor, armored rags and toppers (from advanced katana blueprint I think) are not crafteable at the moment

Crafting itself appears to be incomplete in more fields than just missing armor.
Things I've observed: leather isn't used yet (instead, use fabrics) and chain sheets also can be crafted but not used in any crafting recipe. I'm pretty sure we're going to see several patches dealing with crafting alone.
By the way, I'd love to see a reverse-engineering feature here. If you sacrifice several katanas for example, you may get an idea how to make them without the need of buying a blue print. To keep things balanced, bad (rusty) weapons won't contribute much to the reverse-engineering bar, you'll have to sacrifice better quality weapons.

+1 to reverse engineering.
I'm going to see if this is a part of the Feature Requests board yet.

Reverse engineering does not have a specific topic itself in the features request (at least I don't believe so) but a few of us discussed it in some detail here:

I think that this sounds like a cool idea.

Made a post in the feature requests for reverse engineering located here:
http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB3/viewtop ... =16&t=5770
And I read that thread regarding research improvements, so I started my thread with a more specific change to the research surrounding weapons, armor, and other craftables.
Check it out!

On a different note, last time i visited Catan, i bought blueprints for "mercenary leather armor". to my delight, i discovered that i can make it at the leather armor bench. It is simply a leather version of the plate armor.
