Thoughts about making the game development open source

Hi everybody! I'm pretty new here and I adore the concept that Chris has for this game. It is a unique and interesting vision he have, but since he is working alone, I fear that the development time might drag on in order to ensure quality.

I thought about how that could be solved and came to think of another indie game called 0 A.D. It struggled and almost died because most of the devs quit the project at one point (or something akin to that). Everything looked pretty bleak for a awhile until one of the remaining devs decided to make the game open source. People started to contribute bits and pieces and development has since picked up, equaling a new beta versions every month or so.

I wondered if perhaps the same thing could be applied to Kenshi? If not for any other reason but to offload some of the more non-essential parts off of Chris. What do you think?

I am a staunch supporter for the Free/Libre software movement and have thought many that if I were to code, my resulting programs would either be BSD-2_Clause licensed or Public Domain.

Hopefully Chris will say no... This game has the potential to become bigger than Minecraft(Yeah, I said it.
Oh and the Slashdot effect is a LIE! *shields activated* ) especially among the fans of Skyrim, other concscious living RPGs and other strategy games.

Call me closed minded or dumb but I hate that open source software take time, Kenshi mimics them only in Chris being the sole developer but he's turned down help time and again FOR FREE and COMPLETE transfer of rights to him

Got to love those long url descriptions.

Plus all the administrative things Chris has to do bla bla bla... How fares Desura and their GPL Linux client?

Oh and I know the difference between Open Source and Free/Libre licensing but once more, releasing the source code under the most evil license which enslaves your code whether you release it or not to Kenshi(GPLv3 doesn't do that..yet) might actually put people off of this game.

Too long, didn't read: I am Barooney, and I oppose this idea

Edit: Please don't take this as a personal attack against you.
Welcome to the Kenshi forums and have a nice stay here

No worries, I'm not a very zealous person when it comes to debates. I know when I'm wrong, and you seem a lot more knowledgable than me in this subject. I had no idea that making the game open source included such complications..

But I have to ask, what is this free/libre software thingy you are talking about? How does it differ and why is it better? And why does Chris turn down help?

And lastly, thank you for your kind greetings ;)

Making it open-source in my opinion is, in short:

Bad

In long:
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad

What would be better if Chris would post: 'Anyone want to help with suchandsuch' and people post stuff that he requests help with.

But hey, its his choice and he's doing very well so far.

Kenshi is doing well sales-wise. I have an environment artist about to start work, and I'm currently trying to recruit an Ogre shader programmer. Things will start to pick up more and more over time.

Great news! I want to stress that my original post was not an inclination that your work is not good enough, and I hope you didn't take it as such. Quite the opposite, I think everything is superb thus far and of consistently good quality, but one man can only do so much, thought that this might have helped, but seems open-source isn't all what I thought it too be.

Sorry about that whole Free/Libre software confusion.

I got overzealous when it came to the matter.

The only reason that I kept mentioning the two words is because many confuse Free Software(Open sourced or part of the GNU Project) as software which is not sold for a profit or FreeWare if Libre wasn't added.

Gratis versus libre is the distinction between two meanings of the English adjective "free"; namely, "for zero price" (gratis) and "with little or no restriction" (libre). The ambiguity of "free" can cause issues where the distinction is important, as it often is in dealing with laws concerning the use of information, such as copyright and patents.
Also: Richard Stallman summarised the difference in a slogan: "Think free as in free speech, not free beer."

PS: I promise the entire Kenshi community that this post is the very last post that will bore you about the painfully boring matter of software licensing .

No, it doesnt. This game has massive potential for fantastic and deep gameplay, but it will not be making anywhere near the same sales. minecraft was so successful due to its simplicity, charm, and potential for incredibly addictive building gameplay. You may be able to build towns in kenshi, but dont kid yourself about it becoming bigger than minecraft.

i agree with baroney about the potenial of this game, this game is what a lot of people have been waiting for a total war game but with abillity to build towns anywhere, while right now this game dosen't have a lot of what is planed this game will become great later when more is done and when (mabye) an arist is hired.

mincraft is great because of the mods and myltiplayer, this game can become great just like this, but i don't know whether there will be any myltiplayer (think about it, two great hordes of saber weilding people clad in the best armor colliding together in a fight to the death  ) but the mods already made look awesome and the medeival mod being made looks great (greater to me, no offence but i love medeival) and in time there will probobly be even more mods just as great.
