Advice
I bought Kenshi a while ago and had a pretty decent Max Sqaud of people. I lost my data when my Harddrive died so I'm start from scratch. I am wondering if anyone has any good advice for grinding people to a decent combat level? Without having to make a complicated arena set up or anything since I am still savaging aftermaths of fights for money
i train up the defense and then attack of my first character until they are unbeatable and then use them to chaperone new guys learning to fight the hard way. your main can always kill the enemies quickly and then heal up the new recruits before they die which makes them tougher too. to get your defenses up quickly you need to move on to tougher foes like ninjas and samurais and pray they dont kill you
I tend to put one character on taunt and defend. That one will draw more attention, then I will try and get my weaker fighters to double team one opponent at a time so drop them more quickly.
It also pays to match your squad member with a weapon to match their role. Something with a bonus to defense for the taunter. Even a club can have a bonus for def. and since you are not attacking the attack damage is not important. Some thing with a bonus to attack for the weaker ones. I like wakizashe with a +3 attack but no penalty for def. they are quicker so you can get more hits in.

This may sound dumb, and I hope you don't think I'm trying to be a dick, but fighting is the best way to get better at it. Pick fights that you may not win, too, as it makes you stronger faster. So far the other responses have said dedicate yourself to blocking at the start, and that's totally great advice. I started with the group, freedom somethings or whatnot. My fighter was decent, far better than the rest, so he always took the brunt of the fight. He now takes on high level teams solo and comes out on top.
One thing that no one else has said is weapons and armors. Someone said match weapons with roles, and that's sage advice as well. However, Strength and Dexterity play roles in combat. They're leveled with different weapons. You'll want some heavy hitters, but I've found speed to be the most deadly advantage you can have in combat. Train up strength with heavy weapons and armors. Train up dexterity with faster weapons. Which you do first is up to you, but again, leaning defensively helps more in the long run, and Dexterity lends itself to faster blocking.
Lastly, kind of a silly thing, but it helped me train up fast outside of combat. Load someone up with the highest weight crap you can find, and even have them carry a teammate and then just have them walk around. Or work. I had some of my guys hauling stone at the start, and then the really heavy crafting materials from the work stations to a far off storage space. This actually serves to train up in two ways at the same time if you don't give them heavy armors: when they carry the heavy loads to the storage area, they train up strength, and when they hurry back unburdened, they train up their speed.
There's really no wrong way to make your guys stronger and tougher. There are also no shortcuts. Fight. Win. Have them mop the floor with your face. Eat some sand. Get back up and ask for seconds. As long as you don't die, you get better. Though that last part can prove a bit tricky...
I will say, the one thing you'll want to avoid is fighting the wildlife. Dogs are pretty brutal, but beakthings are dead on 4 legs. Unless you've got a good team, a medic who can stay back and then heal up the dying, or you're SUPER confident in your team, do NOT mess with them.
