ok, i was messing around with this some--not my first choice to make money--but other than money, is there another purpose to it?

Not yet. But I suspect that once a demand for materials comes into the game then there will be a use for it. Maybe along the lines of certain production in certain area's or simply to increase a good that you need more of in your town/place of residence.

trade goods will eventually be used as crafting/building materials
