Building Gates and Renting Houses

So I am at the point where I can afford to update my walls and gates to larger ones, but my men can't build the gates. I place the gates and order them to construct them, but the men just go to the middle of the gate and glitch out a bit and move around slightly. I have tried moving the gat and deleting the walls around it so that it is free standing, but no luck. Have you guys been able to build any gate successfully?
Separately, are there are large buildings for sale in towns? I was just thinking that you really can't do too much till you get some research done and all research really requires a lot of space. I have bought shacks before as a way to store goods and jump start my research with a small bench, but it would be cool if there were some way to buy a bigger building (or restore a destroyed shell for a discounted price in exchange for building materials and labor). It you wouldn't be able to buy out the whole town, but just enough space that actually living in town as a trader or shopkeeper would be doable. Imagine running a weapon shop or the like. Your profits would be lower as you would have to buy the raw materials and production would be limited by the quantity you can buy (maybe we need a bulk trader who stocks more than is currently available?). Just a thought, but it seems pretty easy to implement and would give another way to play.
