Making my own game.

I have an idea id like roll with but i don't know what engine i should pick up to learn. Much like Kenshi I want to make something that hasn't been done, and I have no idea if this game will take off but ill give you an idea of what i'm looking for.

the genre i'm aiming for would be a beat-em-up style RPG with a strategic twist. it will need to be a 2-D engine that has flexibility in terms of moving from a streets of rage style gameplay to switching to a overview map where the player can then can freely move around and have a random encounter type system.

as for what i plan to do with it in terms of setting and style...
its going to be 1600's-1700's colonial era. so basically pirates. why? Because for some reason no developer wants to do a pirate themed game anymore. If a developer does go that route its usually done very badly. -cough- risen 2 -cough- graphically it would be closer to streets of rage or double dragon. so pixels. I want it to look classy however and not be an eyesore.

I plan to go back to the routes of gaming with modern tech and come up with something really fun. maybe with any luck I can really get this project going :D

(would rather not give away too many details just yet... juuuust in case.)

-EDIT-
forgot to mention... it will be a beat-em-up RPG strategy game... with a sandbox twist. I plan to have several factions fighting each other with the player thrown into the fray. The player will be able to pick a side as well. there will be dialogue between characters and factions and i plan to randomize it to the point where every play through is different.

taking a biiiig swing here but i dont see why not.

I know nothing to help you. But hopefully Chris notices this and gives you some helpful tips.

Good luck to your try. I'm happy to buy your game from Steam Greenlight in few years :D

My friend, be ready for trolls to say your game is crap if you make a prototype, so you will nead to distinguish them from critisizers, it can be quite tricky since experienced guys sometimes come here.

Just asking generally... did you code any other games already? :?

Since you're asking what engine to use, i get the feeling that you haven't a lot of exp in this domain yet. So my advice would be to start with something smaller, like those basic games you see everwhere (tetris, pong, any block-clearing game and other games on that level)

Now if you really wanna make it anyway or you got the exp needed, I guess the engine choice depends a lot on personal preference. I like it dirty ( ) and i generally like to code in low language so i'd go for SDL if you are using C or Allegro or SFML for C++. If you are using any other language i can't help much... like i said i like dirty language ( ) like C or C++

For sound stuff i'd go for FMOD EX. I like it a lot and it's free as long as you don't intend to sell your game.

You should always proofread carefully to make sure you didn't any words out.

Need help? pm me or any other mod.

I do have some exp in java but honestly not on this level. seriously the hardest thing i coded was a game of chess where the computer player had a moderately ok AI. It has always been a dream of mine to pick one of my many ideas and roll with it. It will most likely be a code and learn scenario but the plan is to start small like moving a a figure around a map, then add a boundary on that map and so on until something good comes out of it. I would love your input but am realistic in saying it will take a while. I am indeed fortunate though that the internet exists for my many questions lol.

right now its for fun. maybe in the distant future if it turns out well I might try to get it greenlighted if steam is still doing that by then :)

I do hear of most programmers using C but what do you feel would benefit me best in the long run? more than willing to start with new a new language if need be. starting from scratch is always fun.

thanks for all the support :D

No need to start a new language i think imo, but i'm no expert on this. I just talked about c and c++ cause it's my favorite one but java is good too i guess. It's really about personal preference i believe ;)

good luck anyway and keep us updated on your progress :)

Java can be either run live, or pre-compiled, but it's very high level, so the code is clean..... and slow.
I recommend either C++ or a different low level language.
You could use something like visual basic, but it is HATED by some programmers, and could get you a bad rep.
If you want one hell of a challenge, and a lot of fun, try Brain Fuck, it's a nightmare, but it's quite the feeling of success when you get it to write "yay" :)
Minecraft, were it to be made in C++, instead of java, it would be considerably harder to mod, but would run WAYY faster.

honestly i feel I need to learn C++. only reason I used java was because its easier to check your work and all the horror stories my computer science teacher imparted to me. Id like to pick something right in the middle. not too easy to the point where i can be restricted but not too difficult where I want to go to burger king with a pickax. I have the logic in my head i just need to translate it to code. Learning a new language would be good for me anyway. It will help me that I hate to hard code anything especially being that i'm doing a sandbox game.

for example...

i'm doing a level system where i plan to have an array of level pieces that will be randomly generated based on how far the player is in the game and how difficult that level is set to. along with different varieties of AI for different mobs. (as well as drops) to put it in simplistic terms.

I wish i could give more information but I want to try to get this going before someone else decides to finally make a game that i thought up again XD
