Peter F. Hamilton writes some good books if you like long books with a space-ish theme. At least 2 of his trilogies are very good. The others....haven't read them.

i dont have HBO so i have not seen the series but from the previews it looks awesome. but sadly, tv shows tend to lean more towards the sex. especially on HBO.
is this the case with this series as well?

The series is great like the books, it emphasizes on the throne intrigues but as you feared it has strong sexual content. In each episode you'll see a fair share of naked women (mostly prostitutes) and sexual acts.
They really don't hide it, I'd go as far as to say that they actually put sex wherever they can.

I'd say there is less sex in the books but it is certainly there.

There isn't that much sex. There is some but it doesn't break the feel of the setting. A little like the opening part of the Witcher 2, naked boobies are there but it just seems to fit with the setting and increases the immersion and realism rather than detracts from it.
I suggest you try getting a hold of the series; they are available on DVD as well as apparently all good illegal sites on the web.
