RPGs, whats good?

Personally, my top favourite RPGs would the the Gothic/Risen series. Basically they are the same game, but do to the legal issues with pirranna Bytes and Nordic Games (Formally Jowood), they are not. I loved both games style of game-play when compared to Oblivion's. However, Oblivion had a better combat system and a bigger map and the ability to create your own character.

Dungeons and Dragons :P
I never thought I'd play a game where I'd throw a naked cannibalistic halfling with one hand who was out to kill a king(who just hired me to kill his mother) out of a tower window. But that's how things go sometimes.

Been thinking about this for a while and I don't really know. I used to like gothic a bit and a few others but the last few years I've gone right off rpg's of all kinds. Can't find the spark anymore.

There's a lot of rpg I liked a lot, but I'd like to pick out a less mainstream one called The Bards Tale.

The mechanics seemed to work for me (it's been some time since i played it), but the best part was the character and the story by far. It makes fun of a lot of the rpg clichees, eg your first mission is to kill giant rats in the cellar and your main character will say sth like "not the typical kill-giant-rats-quest", the main chara and the narrator often argue with each other lol, or you encounter "former chosen ones" (you yourself are called "the chosen one" obviously). And tons of stuff like like. The beer song where you can sing along, the cute princess, strange goblins, talking swords, ... ah memories

I'll probably have to take the old dvd out and play it now  (if I can find it...)

Skyrim is probably my favorite, the only other good one that comes to mind is Mount & Blade, Warband. It takes a risk/europa universalis aproach. Both have character creation, open world and modding.

Really? What strategy is their to hiring the biggest band of warriors then fighting everyone else s? Its a great game, but i don't think much strategy is involved.

I find that question hard to answer because there is so many examples I simply do not care enough to sum them all up. Some factors: castles, land, other kingdoms, other warbands, villages and citizens, races/nationalities, combat strategy; terrain, unit types, military size, and they all have dozens of factors like relationship, economy, trade, strength and so on. In addition there is mods to make it even more complex.

You can just run around with units and kill people, but the game is actually much more complex then that.

I know there are some strategy elements to it, but its pretty much just a hack and slash game. Though i admit, some of the mods for it do add a greater importance to strategy.

Well, you could say that about any game mentioned here. What is an 'RPG' if not a hack and slash with some talkie bits? I tend to like sand box games more than RPGs, but most sand box style are considered RPGs. Some I have enjoyed recently are the Star Wolves series (which is pretty much Kenshi in space), Fallout New Vegas (I despised Fallout 3), and Mount and Blade Warband ( I really enjoy the mods Prophesy of Pendor, and 1257 AD).

If you like story driven RPGs, I would suggest Bloodlines, and the Witcher for their dynamic changes.

A hack and slash with 'talkie bits'. Ha, great simplification!

I too like Prophecy of Pendor, it's a great mod. A little difficult at times sinc I am such a bad M&B player....but still fun.

Star Wolves is a fun game (if I am thinking of the same game). You are pilots and equip missiles and guns and stuff and have a mothership....right? Never got very far into it but an enjoyable game none-the-less.

How exactly are we definging RPG's i here? I've never been very good at putting things into their own genre's. How loose is the context of 'playing a role'? To some extent The Guild 2 is fun, but buggy. I have a bunch of games on steam but they tend to be more strategy than the traditional RPG. Still things like 'Breath of Death 7' and 'Cthulhu saves the world' are fun little rpg's. Wouldn't call them my favourites though.

Big fan of any open world game, Gothic 2 is probably my favorite, has far better combat than any of the TES games.

Currently playing Dragon's Dogma (on the 360), quite enjoyable so far.

Fallout1,2,3,FO:NV is great too.

Ah yes, I found the songs in that game hilarious.

Again, my vote for Gothic series

My Personally favorite part is was when he was talking about the one time he slayed a wolf and a chest blah, blah popped up as loot, then 10 mins later you run into a wolf which indeed makes this occur...
Also I love the barrelmaker.

Ahh, its been a long time. I had forgotten about good old Mr. Yatzhee. Most amusing.

I actually find them quite informative, provided you realise that he will say bad things about everything you can use what bad things he says as a good judge of a game.

He comes of as a person who once used to be a gamer and then grew old, boring and bitter because he no longer can relate to it, at least not in a good way. I've got a few friends just like him, they no longer enjoy new movies, video games or even new music. I find that depressing and i hope i hope i never turn out like that ;)

Good point. Although I still think it is all an act. He needs to stay in character; he would lose his fan-base if he suddenly started gushing over the new My Little Pony 7 3ds cartridge to come out.

Obviously its a bit over-the-top to be "funny", but its not a complete act. His fan-base are mostly bitter old gamers i believe
