Gog had a sale and I bought this. Really odd, kind old RPG with (at least in number 1) some pretty average graphics. All 5 of them in a pack on gog for about $8 now. Dunno if you guys are into this kinda stuff but you can get the demo online and it lets you play up to a 1/5th of the game for free (which is really long).

Ah a rougelike/dungeon crawl (Is that what they called?) If I can make my character eat a scroll and be lit aflame then I am sold. (Nethack game)

Not so sure about eating scrolls. but i am having fun oppressing the little people and joining the faction of little people that want to be oppressed further. Once I got into it I found it to be quite fun actually. Levelling has an interesting aspect to it and exploration is very HIGHLY rewarded. EXP is not the be-all, end-all to levelling. There are quite a lot of 'things' scattered around that give you a skill level-up in a pre-determinded ability whereas a normal level-up might allow you to take maybe 1-3 skill level ups. This focus on finding out about the world and getting stronger is well implemented. Feels very balanced and the interconnectedness of the world is growing on me.

Plus, morally grey zones turn me on.

when i played the game it was on something like desura but it gave you 2 tries (or tokens) to play the game, after that you have to buy the game.

The guy who made the Geneforge games also makes the Avernum series. I personally like Avernum better out of the two, so if you enjoyed Geneforge you should check it out.

I've avoided avernum for some reason. Thought it looked pretty shitty. At least steam has never managed to convince me to buy based on the shitty movie they have or the screenshots or description.

That is the problem with window shopping though.
But I quite like the 'Saga' idea for geneforge. Each sequel tells and expands on the story. Of course, I've yet to finish game number 1. Should get back to it.

My only problem with Avernum is that the character creation feels very shallow. Other then that, the old school turn based combat style works very well, and was something I believed I had grown out of.

Ohh, the turn based combat is the most annoying thing about these games. I tolerate it simply because I enjoy the setting and story. If that is all avernum has going for it then I won't like it.

Well the story is nice, but I don't care for the setting as it all takes place underground. (Which, you can't tell because of camera angles and such, but meh)
