Lo-Fi Games

First things first: it can be ANy music. Hip-pop, rock, disco, orchestra, game-related, national anthem, indie, dance it doesn't matter, as long as it's music. Also please say what makes you choose them.

1: Halo: Combat Evolved main theme
2: Killzone menu theme
3: Mozart - Piano Sonata No 11 in a major K 331 third movement
4: USSR national anthem
5: Portugal's national anthem

Reasons: Portugal anthem: I like my country. And also I feel like going out there and put back the glory we had in the Discovery age.
USSR anthem: it feels... inspiring, like I should stand with everyone I know until we all die, fighting to the death.
Mozzart 3rd movement: it's thrilling, like it's representing the excitment we all have.
Killzone menu theme: it's representing the dark side of the war and that it's dangerous, but you are still alive but there is still unfinished business, like it's personal.
Halo Combat evolved main theme: it's like it's making you sound like the hero, like you are doing everything and that you know that you won't die.

You are asking too hard questions. It's impossible to say top 5 when there are so many good songs out there. Also I'm listening many music styles for different reasons, I can't say which is better because they work in different situations.

Anyways, I will try to put good songs from different styles that are good from different reasons. They are not in order and I can't even say they are the best in their own "class".



1. Doctor P - Tetris
I think Doctor P is one of those who have found the secrets of twisting the fuck out of dub. He has magical power in his hands which make music that bends time and space. Every drop comes in exactly right place and melody (if there is one) fits in perfectly. I'm big fan of "pointless music, art and humor." I really don't know why... There is no point in it And that's why I like dubstep and music that has no vocals, music which only purpose is to create something new and blow up your mind on the way. I chose this song from him because this binds beautifully together nostalgia and familiar voices into a new concept. (This song actually has some point in it) If you like music that makes you feel like you were singing with purple monkey dressed as a clown and playing bonang, then Doctor P is for you. Other great song from him is for example Big Boss.

2. Turmion Kätilöt - Paha Ihminen (*Midwifes of Ruination - Bad Human) (Sounds funny in English )
So... Of course no one will understand a thing because they sing in Finnish. But anyways, I listen to a lot of Finnish music (more than other Finns I think) because (even though I like dubstep and stuff) the words and the message are one of the most important thing when making any art and no matter how long you study, you will never learn to understand all the nuances of the foreign language. I have to admit that this song has made me literally cry many times, which might sound weird due to spirit of the music, but the words are just so right! Turmion Kätilöt has only few songs that include top lyrics IMHO, that's why I first thought of putting something from band Stam1na. Stam1na don't even have bad lyrics, every one of their songs are great and have deep lyrics. I still decided to put Turmion Kätilöt because their song Teurastaja (*butcher) was one of my first introductions to slightly more aggressive music. I will try to translate some of the chorus of Paha Ihminen:

3. Dimmu Borgir - Gateways
Their music just sounds awesome and powerful. Don't really know much else to say. One of the gems of the Norwegian music straight from black forests. Along with Gorgoroth they rule the world playing with human kind from their thrones on top of the mountains. Yet again, it's hard say Dimmu Borgirs best song but Mourning Palace deserves at least to be mentioned. But I still decided to link you to Gateways because it's one of the songs you can hear clearly the symphonic influence of their music. It's from their newer albums. It's great though I prefer their older work.


4. Juice Leskinen - Virsi (*Psalm)
Pauli Matti Juhani Leskinen, better known as Juice Leskinen is one of the pioneers of Finnish rock music. You can ask from any Finn and they can name at least one of Juices songs. No one knows the Virsi though . Only thing I can really say on the "top 5" thing is that he is my top 1 idol. Man who was ugly as fuck, had terrible singing voice, never had HUGE amount of musical talent, alcoholic and went through many miserable times and divorces. But as a songwriter he is just amazing. His verbal and literary talent was greater I have ever seen. His lyrics are just incredible and they include huge amount of deep thinking, political and ethic statements, strong emotions, references to literature, history and philosophy... Anything one can wish from lyrics. And he always made everything to rime. It was something that was very important to him, on one of his songs (Keskitysleirin ruokavalio *concentration camps diet) was almost ready. All he needed was one rime. One or 2 words on one place to complete the song. He refused to publish the song because it wasn't perfect. After over 3 years of thinking he invented what fits to song and the song got published. That's only one example of his tendency to perfection. God, I have so much to say about him no matter how I try to praise him it doesn't sound good enough. From the bottom of my heart, I pity everyone who can't understand his work on mothers tongue. He has remade some of his best known songs in English but of course they can't give you the same affect than those with his native language. (listen here.) His lifework contains hundreds of songs he sang himself or songs he wrote for others. He tried many music styles from pop to rock to rap to child music to humor. Also, he has written around 20 poem books and other novels. The first link is one of his many songs dealing with religions (especially Christianity) and Juices music was one of the first things to teach me critical thinking. The particular song is almost unknown in Finland too but I think it has great thoughts about dilemmas in religions and logics behind them. There is so much more to say about Juice Leskinen but since no one really cares about some psycho singing in foreign language I try to end this here. Of course I'm happy to anwer any questions

5. Bobby McFerrin
This is actually very recent find of mine. Occasionally I find myself listening to jazz or reggae on a back round when hanging or eating or working or something. Usually it's just some random playlists from where ever I can find them and it's rare for me to know the artist or the name of the song I'm listening to. Only few months ago I was listening to some Jazz list from 8tracks and there was something from this guy. It sounded interesting and I'm always looking for something new. Later I found out this is the guy who has made "don't worry be happy." Great song in every way but mostly I'm interested of his "stranger" singing style. It really is something I have never heard before and it sounds good but there is very little from him in the internet even though he is hard boiled, old school professional in music business. So I pretty much have to survive with the stuff on youtube and here he is improvising and it sounds awesome and I'm just amazed by his skill and profession. Also, This one is long but I enjoyed watching the whole thing.

6. Top 5 is just too small!! Here you can listen the greatest achievement of human kind. I have no words for the beauty of this. You have to here it for yourselves!
