This topic gave me the urge to do this
What the best rts in the world of PC gaming? what's your favorite? Talk it over here and cast a vote
About the choices in the poll: i tried to include all the rts i have at home and consider a potential rts-must-have but i've found out that i only can have a max of 10 options... So i'll probably add another poll later with the crème de la crème.
If you can't find your best rts, just cast a vote in your comment
Here's my original list (as you can see, i already took out some games), obviously there's probably some rts-god i forgot to include

do tell me in your comment
Starcraft
Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty
Company of Heroes
Rise of Nations
Sins of a Solar Empire
Homeworld
Rome: Total War
Medieval II: Total War
Warhammer 40,000
Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos/Frozen Throne
Age of Empires I
Age of Empires II
Age of Empires III
Empire Earth
Supreme Commander
Supreme Commander II
Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars
Command & Conquer: Red Alert I
Command & Conquer: Red Alert II
Command & Conquer: Red Alert III
Dune II

Warhammer 40k and CoH was superb, and is friendly for all lvls of play.
Starcraft II is the most fun to watch though.
Edit: Oh Hello Vurt...

This WILL be a hard choice, damn you 1337.
I would have to say Warhammer 40,000.My reason was the extremely enjoyable LAN play. Warhammer LAN had many great moments. (For example, it once took my brother and I an hour to retake this one hill. Under the cover of artillery strikes we charged the enemy occupied hill, and when it was all over there were bodies and craters everywhere.) Many of the games listed eventually fade the bodies/battle scars but this game really allowed the player to see the aftermath when the battle is over.
Wait what about:
Command & Conquer The Original (Unless that is listed under Tiberium Series)
Command & Conquer Generals
World in Conflict (It was ok)

A lot for warhammer 40k for now

I have a dvd but didn't even take the plastic out yet

received it from a friend at some point ages ago lol... maybe i should give it a try
I semi-included c&c generals in the tiberium series, as I said i had to cramp everything into 10 choices

but don't worry just cast a vote in the comment

and don't refrain from talking about some that aren't in the list...
Since i'm playing sc2 right now, i'd have to give it one vote at least, for the solo campaign i especially liked the videos before, between and after the missions (the one where zeratul meets kerrigan was sooo great imo

)
and age of empires 2 will always have a special place in my heart (with the doormat that says "welcome")
Edit:

+1 That's why i changed the poll so you can cast 3 votes and change them if you want. One vote seemed impossible for me

While I love Relic RTSs I've got a massive hardon for the Total War games, I wish there were more games that were actual strategy titles as opposed to real time tactics (which is what the scale most RTSs are at are) I just love building up this giant army and rampaging all over Europe.

C&C Generals and Age of Mythology are easily my favorites of all time. But they're kinda on the list and kinda not.
I'll vote for Dawn of War for the options most clearly presented however.

Maybe Supreme Commander is more your alley then? Real Strategy vs tactics game...
I liked the fact that you could have a giant battlefield filled with units and then just smash down a nuclear projectile and blast away half the map and thousands of units with that
I played a lot of Rome Total War, but i found that the AI sometimes didn't know what it was doing, also i had to play all my battles because that came out better than using the auto-battle function that just spilled out a result
I received Age of Mythology in my gamestar magazin (but haven't played it a lot

) isn't it kind of included in aoe series? I thought it was a spin off from age of empires, done by the same Ensemble studios and microsoft

the AI in the newer TW games is a lot better (especially when you have it on the harder difficulties) and the entire point of the auto result is that if you commanded it you'd generally do a better job as the AutoResolve is just a mathematical formula based on an accumulated attack and defense score (at least in the newer ones)
Also I played sup-com and when modded up sup-com 1 was really good, the sequel however was complete and utter shite

I used to be all about Total War but I dunno. After Shogun 2 I just lost interest after beating one total conquest campaign. I occasionally go back to a M2TW mod though.
I have Supreme Commander but I've only played a couple of missions, never really got back into it. Doesn't have the expansions though.
Age of Mythology is pretty much identical to Age of Empire with a few key points of difference. I really consider it separate from the main series mainly because I found it so much better. It did so much right I'm unsure of how they made AoE3, which while not bad wasn't as good as it could have been.
- Three factions with minor sub factions. All totally different gameplay wise(except sub factions) which is a refreshing thing given most the AoE series, why they didn't continue with that in AoE3 I can't fathom.
I find this to be the greatest thing about the game.
- God powers, most are one shot deal but many if properly applied can save you and ruin the enemy. They're fairly balanced though.
- Favor resource, no stone. Generate favor with gods to use their blessing and mythological creatures.
- More story driven campaign as opposed to historical campaigns. Very good missions.

i love most of the games on there, mianly
CoH
Total war series
Warhammer 40,000
AoE
C&C
sins of the solar empire
starcraft 1 ( didnt like 2 as much).

i think i saw a mod in the makeing that uses the very well made AI for shogun 2 and putting it in other total war games.
But that sounds like a hard job so it probably will die like most other mods.

that's great
Maybe it's just me but didn't anyone like empire earth?
I always liked the fact you could play with cavemen

or that you could fight with mech and nuclear weapons against players who were literally ages behind
Even the other way around was fun, i once played (against AI) until medieval age and stopped there and had this whole story about being an ancient civilization protecting an artifact against the upcoming modern age

Empire Earth was okay but I dunno. I never really enjoyed constantly having to migrate resources or the seemingly cartoonish nature I felt the battles had.

I enjoyed Empire Earth II. I liked the fact that both you and a friend can literally be on the same team (Sharing a civilization (One guy controls economy and the other controls military

)). AI always somehow managed obtain tanks/planes while I was still riding horses. When comparing EE series to the other listed RTSs it really does not stand a chance.

EEII was good, EEIII was an abomination.

DO NOT get me started on EEIII.
Ruined the series completely.

I haven't played neither ee2 nor ee3... what did change? I could get both for less than 10bucks, but if ee3 is that bad, i won't bother

CoH, Sins of a Solar Empire, and Total war are all very good, but i voted warcraft, specifically warcraft 3. Since even after you get board with the default of the game it has its own editor to create new games, Not limited to RTS.
Most of those other games I never tried before.

EEIII, I cannot say as to what the hell happened but I can safely bet that allot of liquor and about one weekend was used to make it.
I could not get into Sins of a Solar empire, the maps were huge but the style was very different. (Nice graphics however. If you haven't, try the Age of Empire Series (literally just bought AoEII), command & Conquer (Original, has a nice 90s feel) or Warhammer 40,000 (excellent battles).
