This idea, more than likely, has been suggested before.

Keeping track of hunger and thirst. This would put more emphasis on the need to grow crops and find an efficient source of water (maybe wells will eventually run dry?). Supply and demand of food and water could vary depending on location, and different lands have different fertility levels.

A need for food an water would also make expeditions more adventurous and rewarding (hopefully).
