Let's take inspiration from league of legends minions to add organic warfare and politics to kenshi factions.

In league of legends, each side has a home base defended by towers, there are multiple lains on which spawn automated minions to walk down the lain towards the enemy base, these minions do battle and attack towers and the enemy base.

Surely we can use a similar system in Kenshi to simulate organic warfare between factions, the attacking and destroying/overthrowing/capturing of forts and towns. Our minions would simply be formations of soldiers, our towers are fortresses and other strongholds or special locations, and our bases are the major cities and the player build bases, and the lains are the major roads that connect all the major cities.

And if we make some stats of the soldiers reliant on their equipment (this is already the case) then we the players could influence how well a faction is doing by more than just fighting, if we could sell/donate equipment to the faction so that they equip their troops with said equipment. This way you can have a real influence on the ongoing wars even if you only role-play as a shopkeeper or smith. Donating ancient tech could also help if you allow the factions to upgrade what they can fabricate to give better equipment to their troops, in this way you play an exploration/ruin raiding play style you can have an influence on how well a faction is doing. Of course boosting your currently favorite faction could also turn out to be a double edged sword if you later come to blows with them, which could also make for a nice increase in difficulty.

Not all factions have to be in a constant state of warfare, and if you allow to the player to negotiate with NPC's faction leaders about whom to make alies with or who to go to war with then this is another route the player can take to influence how a war will turn out.

By making faction war an organic system the players can actual play with the system and find ways to influence who wins and even join in as their own faction to try to rule the world. The most important aspect of it is that it is an organic system rather than the event/triggered system we have now in Kenshi 1, which feels fake and clunky.
