So i was thinking it would be cool if you could get permission from a faction to set up a town i there name and you'd be like the Governor or warlord or something depending on the faction. In return u would get some goons protecting your ass while you set up for like 50 days or something like that, but in return you would have to give them like a % of profit or goods you produce. On top of that there could be a whole political part of it that brings you into the hierarchy of factions based off the things you've done. Another way this could be interesting is if you join the military and proceed through a rank system through battles and wars and once you reach a certain rank, like general or something they give you a plot of land some workers and some body guards and tell you to retire. Once you retire as a war dog though you can choose to like run for office and things of that nature, this would let u say just buy a bunch of people to vote for you or you are more a sneaky sneak kinda guy you could get some of your ninjas to rig the election. Just an idea i was playing around with needs some more development i think though

Politics?
I agree there should be a side of politics, maybe not as simple as M&B where you just do repetitive tasks to curry favor (I hate comparing games) but not as complicated to make people say "wtf is this?" The possibilities looking into politics are endless, getting elected as governor/mayor or promoted as a general as you stated (possibly working in said army to help chances of being made a general?)
Starting your own faction and declare yourself as president/king/warlord? (choosing president allows elections perhaps) Even once you "conquer" all of the Kenshi map maybe you have to maintain your empire by winning elections or controlling the populace through either brute force or persuasion? Possibilities if unsatisfied with your rule that they begin to form their own political party? (So the game never really ends) Just some thoughts. (:

Yeah I agree, we have to make sure that there are politics, but also make sure that all of sudden we get raped by a small faction.
In other words, we gotta make sure we don't turn kenshi into a geopolitical simulator like Rulers of Nations or Masters of The World.

"Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful."
