Maybe when it turns night in game, visibility is reduced or something, and your men would have to carry torches. Is should be cool to make night more dangerous. This could do well with ambushed on enemy attacks and also would discourage players to explore and have their men travel alone at night.
Just a neat idea I thought of.

If this has already been posted, I'm sorry.

Yeah I see what you mean, like bandits could be more active in the night making it more hazardous.

I could see night being a more interesting feature if there was a need for lights to see the terrain around you. Of course, this wouldn't really be a practical feature until there was some sort of option to camp for the evening. It could trigger some random events, strangers coming to your fire etc. In some biomes fire could keep away predators, and in others it could attract bandits. I'm not sure how Ogre would react to a ton of dynamic light sources though, and you'd really have to add lights to every building, and spots/floods to turrets once we can build them along our walls. It could be a cool feature, but I'm not sure how it would impact the minimum requirements for the game. Ultimately we'll just have to wait and see what Chris has in store for us with regards to nights. Since we can't exactly look up at the sky, I have always assumed the world of Kenshi has a multitude of moons that keep the night lit as brightly as a full moon every night.

by adding it as an optional feature that would keep minimum requierments down a lil.

I think night is an almost must for the realism factor, being day all the time or even a bright bright night would effect the ecology alot. Kinda alot harder to explain to make it seem realistic i think.

I like the idea of torches and campfires but if it was a "must have", that would ruin alot of the aspect of Ninjas and bandits.
This could also open up "warmth" as a stat much like Hunger
I can also see additional AI scripting like, larer fires or more torches warnning groups away or causing them to attack

The fact that plant life in our world is largely guided by the daylight hours so that they know when to bloom and seed has very little bearing on what life would be like on another world. There are a great many similarities to our world in the world of Kenshi, but unless crops are going to wither and die, take ages to grow and have limited yields, I don't think that a realistic ecology is a goal that needs to be maintained. The fact of the matter is, yes darker nights might be nice to have, but realism needs only exist insofar as it increases suspension of disbelief and entertainment value. I can't speak towards Chris' plans for the night, or dynamic lighting, or even the capabilities of Ogre3D rendering numerous dynamic light sources. But if anything like this is planned, it's a ways off, more robust AI interactions with outposts, dynamic event generation, more diverse biomes and a larger map are all more important than making nights appear darker. In the end darker nights could readily be simulated by dropping visibility to a small circle around your group, and then something akin to what I talk about in the I've Been Robbed thread with night time raids might be a valuable gameplay asset.

But one of the best things about darker nights is fire, dynamic lighting of various areas, and its potential gameplay mechanics in my opinion. That being the case, if something like this was planned it would entail a fairly large undertaking, and would need to bring substantial gameplay enhancements in order to be a valuable use of Chris' time. But who knows, it's entirely possible that Chris already has plans for night time, dynamic lights and all, and is looking into outsourcing what he can of such a project as we speak. Until we get word from the man himself all I can say is it seems more like a luxury than a must have feature.

I for one think torches should be added as a weapon capable of harming buildings. This way bandit raids on your settlement could be more dangerous than simply being knocked out, as they might burn all your progress. And in reserve, make it all the more rewarding when you ransack a town, as you can set it ablaze and damage a faction with a far deeper wound.

An idea to make torches and light sources useful, is that it could force your render distance to be shorter ( to a preset, and if you have a torch it would let you get half of what your current render distance is.). As well as lowering the aggro range of people outside of the light, meaning you could be stealthier during night without it, but couldn't see as far, or you could have the light and see reasonably well, but you are now aggro bait without as much ability to avoid groups.

When it's dark out, you really never notice. They should add it where it becomes pitch black and you either run lights with generators or you use torches/lamps, and at night people walk around with lamps or torches. Who thinks this would be a nice feature. It'd be a nice feature and add a little more, "You're not a hero" type feel. It'd be an idea since you can train your men to have better night vision/sight so they can ambush/attack places/persons with more skill and you'll earn the upperhand. If you're going to wander out by yourself with little to no torch, you'd be a target aswell. I'd think it'd add more of a strategy feel to the game instead of owning the most men with the bigger swords and better armor.

I like the idea of light generators that sounds cool.

i think we are already getting generators, so making them portable wouldnt be hard.
But again love the thought of night warfare and such, kinda gives more vision to all them books
