EternalAmbiguity wrote:^ I do think the comment about utilizing the experimental branch better is certainly fair. If stuff is complete, even if not balanced, having an update with it available would only be a boon to the game--everyone knows it's a work in progress, but indeed, they DO know it's a "work" that's actually "in progress."

The experimental has issues with FPS currently and many people has said they left experimental because it was nearly unplayable for them. I have a good machine and i do have some bad FPS at times.

we will see when the next update comes out since it now has DirectX 11 and supposed to greatly improve the current FSP issue.

I'd generally appreciate if you can elaborate on this. After listening to people's suggestions of weekly blogs I've been trying hard to keep the community well updated on what we're doing, so I personally don't feel like we've been silent recently. Unless you mean the lack of a release date? In which case, we're simply not ready to give a date yet, we don't want to mislead people with another incorrect estimate.

They're working on complex things at the moment, it wouldn't be possible to release weekly. I expect that at the next stage (which Chris referred to as B-Alpha, you can see in our road map), new content will be more frequent, since all the complicated stuff will be out the way. By all means, frequency of updates are not a measure of progress.
The Steam percentage is higher then 1 %, that number you just fabricated with all the history of reviews from the beginning.
Go to steam and look for the reviews that are current, let us say 2 months maximum.
Read them and you will see where this is going.

It is funny to see the people who are hired to keep the critics down , always respond as first to any criticism I give, while the things I say are factual!!
updates where promised in February, to be released in April, so the same line every time to say they don't give an update because they do not want to give false expectations, is totally bonkers!
go see the update page on this site!

Also in this thread someone mentioned that the team is incapable to solve the bugs and issues and resolve to making new content to prolong the life time of the game.

With current developments of a picture Friday and teasers of new buildings, and no patches, I must say the guy seems to be dead on target.

I wonder if the moderators who defend the devs, will also be so big to say they defended a dead cat when the game falls apart in a few months.
signs to watch:

Step one: no updates, and frantic efforts to try to keep the fan base happy with nothing.
Step two: On Sale on steam
Step three: dead silence on updates and a new game announced

Step one is already in place, waiting for step 2.

Fabricated? No. 1% down for a month or so ago is based off a comment I made on here stating the positive reviews were at 87%. They are now at 86% from the point that I had made that comment. So yes. 1%..

Hired? I was ok with your criticism in this thread up until this last one. What you basically did was try to sue the city for leveling your home, and then when people looked and saw your home was still standing in one piece right where it was, you're now blowing up on them. The reviews are 1% down from a month ago, and Kooma posted updates one week ago. Both of those were things that happened on the very board you declared they did not...

Predictions, predictions.. Predictions are just simply that, a guess. If that happens, then it's unfortunate, but until it does, there's not much grounds for declaring the game dead until it actually is.

I'll take you up on that though. Let's give it a few months and see where this goes.

Criticism is fine.. But passing judgement based off false observations and guesses is not. If the game fails, it will likely be due to people such as you rioting to make it happen. Self-fullfilled prophecies, as they say. But even still, I don't think that will be the case. Kenshi is still strong enough in self-integrity to continue developing disregarding nay-sayers.

You're free to your opinions, guesses, and concerns about a future, but whether they are true or false can only really be declared once they happen... You can either help Kenshi to prevent it from happening, ignore it altogether, or go about raising a storm in efforts to make it collapse.. I am curious though. Is that third option your goal? Are you legitimately trying to help in the developement of Kenshi, or just here to call out a failing future? Not that it matters one way or the other, and you certainly don't have to tell, but it is a curiosity of mine.

Oh, I agree there are issues. I too have a powerful machine--an i5 3570k OC'd to 4.5, 16 GB of RAM and a 290X--and I was getting 20 FPS and lower when I tried to play a couple weeks ago (I finally stopped because I couldn't take it).

Still, I don't think every new addition is going to cause the framerate to tank.

It shouldn't... They had made it fairly clear this was a temporary issue with porting to the new engine. The DX11 work (which is completed) should fix this, from what i understand.. It's just about getting it into a position that it can be released.

This has been about our 4th sale in the last 18 months. There's no need to panic about a game going on sale.
w30wnz wrote:Anyways, I think people would appreciate if you all better utilized stable and experimental branches to give us quicker access to new material. With respect to pushing out features you're confident are stable into in the actual core game more quickly (Such as the several mentioned complete features in the road map) and allowing us to try these still under development features in the experimental build even if they are game breaking as that is the whole purpose of the build setup between stable and experimental versions.
Unfortunately we can't release finished features in their own separate updates - basically, all the new features need to sync up and be finished together in order to work. I've actually asked the same question before myself, here's an example Chris used to explain it to me...

Imagine 2 mechanics working on the same car, all on a separate part. One guy is changing the tyres, another is fixing the gearbox. Now imagine the first guy has finished changing the tyres and the owner wants to take it for a drive- problem is the 2nd guy currently has the gearbox in pieces, he hasn’t finished yet so the car is going nowhere.

Hmm. How are they doing builds? From this it sounds like they're all working on the same build at once.

It might be useful to figure out a way to separate them and work independently. Not only for smaller, individual experimental releases, but so they can test things out without needing someone else to compile their work.

It can't be easy to test out a feature like the lighting when you're waiting on a completely unrelated AI fix, for example. Or am I not understanding correctly?

Interesting, I assume this is because of the port over to DX11? But after this last Dev Diary I am happy with the level of content you are preparing for this next update hopefully it is a stable release though considering the care put into it's release.

No, you're absolutely right. One of the benefits of modular code design is that you can update different parts of the code separately, and then once it's working, update that module fix into the actual release code. The only reason to not have each build item/fix worked on separately from the release code is if one item relies on another, like darkness and torches. But even in that case you can just have two module areas checked out to the same person (checked out code means that while the person who checked it out is making updates, everyone else still only sees the existing version of the code, not the incomplete changes.) And that way both modules can be changed, while the rest of the team doesn't have to worry about those chunks of code not being completely built yet.

This method also allows for component/unit testing, where you can test a build item or fix completely separate from everything else. And then later, once it's plugged into the release code, someone will test it to make sure that having it with the rest of the code didn't break anything.

Hi guys ... and girls ... or catgirls ... whatever i remember reading somewhere around here !

I dont know anything about the game reviews, the metascore of steam or the update frequency or the so-called silence on the game or that it's supposed to be dead in a few weeks. Actually ... i dont even care !

Because i'm really, really enjoying this game, even in its experimental version. Basically, it is a game which has tons of potential, even running around with a bunch of losers in rags armed with iron sticks is fun ! Getting mauled by desert wolves is awesome !

But i do understand this is the place to criticise ! So let's !

Critic one: Why the hell is my cute steel bar worker, (names is Horatius, kind of hairy, and intimidating, pretty tall but ... only 2 in attack skill ...), KEEPS OPENING MY DAMN level IV gates everytime i'm trying to close it ? xD !! Didnt asked for a residential warden or something, did he think it would make more fresh air inside the walls ? I thought this was going to be fixed ! O_-'

Critic two: We knew bandits, hungy bandits, desert bandits, well bandits everywhere ! Now i have X-mens spawning into my base when gates are fully locked up ! And guess what ? they usually brought friends ! ... Dog-like friends ... well dogs really, sort of ... Where THE HELL DO THEY COME FROM ? I'll ask Mulder i guess. O_O

Critic three: Everyone likes travelling the desert ... Sooooo why can't i do that without getting stuck on a cliff due to really really pooor pathfinding ... thing ? I reckon that was one of the most important fix to have ! :D !

Critic four: Why is rattan hat texture so messed up ? I can't have only straw hats for my samurai ! THAT'S NOT FAIR FIX THAT TEXTURE ! Fashion is indeed important ... -_-' Wait! Chainmail is ugly too ! why not use the chainmail sheets texture for actual chainmail armors ? Wait, that's was a suggestion not a critic ... Silly me ... Oh well, i'm good with photoshop so i made new textures myself ! :P

Well, i'm sure there's is plenty of annoying fix to do eh ? But i'm happy right now, good base, good armors, catan N°4 katanas, damn i love that texture look ! And of course ... super fast dogs ... wolves, anyways they look like they are dogs.

Have fun fixing stuff and developping or, well, whatever you guys do when working on a game, i'll be sure to play it anyways !

Keryyn, about your first complaint, the gate issue--that's a bug the game has had for a while with the pathfinding where your characters have to have a gate open to move around. In my opinion this is one of the most egregious bugs and one that dearly, dearly needs a fix--though it appears the problem is pretty deep and the team's been spending a ton of time on it.

Thank you for the feedback Keryyn! I believe most of the points you've made are related to the path finding, which EternalAmbiguity beat me to.

^This. They're working on it but it may take a long time before being completely fixed. Part of the pathfinding engine needs re-writing.

And sorry EternalAmbiguity, I am way out of my depth with programming questions since I have the technical knowledge of a small squirrel.

One thing is im not really sure i like how the forums have been split between steam and here. Normally steam forums are just left with a single subforum if there's already a solid game forum and used for general steam stuff while more robust discussion can go on on the main forums.

Its not a big gripe. I just wish i could follow one forum and still be able to see all the dev posts, i know chris posts over there more than here recently.

Steam users tend to be a bit more umm cranky. so tis no surprise steam gets a few extra posts about updates. though nat is doing a good job on keeping up with them here.
and i post on Raptr.

I agree with Matt. I rather would like to have everything in one place (here) but most Steam folks are way too lazy to register and stuff.
