I saw a while back that the robotic limb replacements were being back-burnered or cancelled. I've been holding off moving my base until I know if carbon's going to be a factor in placement or not; is it still planned to have a function?

Not that it would matter much if it was going to be used for anything. Last I knew there was no carbon on the map at all for harvest, just a little inside shops. So you wouldn't know where to put your base regardless.

I couldn't even think of where it might be used at all. Quite pointless as a fuel, since oil plays a similar role. Could be a source of diamonds to get rich or maybe carbon fiber for armor and closing could be created out of it. Probably the very reason why it's still not around: "We should add carbon! yay, awesome idea! *adding carbon* oh, wait, but what it's going to be used for? err... ok, screw it just yet, back to important stuff!"

Carbon would be used for making steel i would think as that's how it's done now.
but for ingame... maybe that's what the Dev was thinking as well. just it's not been implemented.

Oh, right! I totally forgot about steel! Would love to see it done the kosher way ingame.

Carbon fiber could also be used to make advanced wind turbines. The carbon fiber blades would be much lighter than blades made out of iron plates so it would be possible to build a large wind turbine that generated power in low wind conditions.

Just a hunch, but we probably won't see a source (and also a use) for carbon added in until the map expansion that adds territory for scorchlanders. It sounds about right that it'd be found in volcanic/blasted areas, and tar pits.

The weight of the turbines wouldn't be the main factor prohibiting low wind usefulness. Weight isn't even really an issue beyond simple momentum. The power that flows from the turbine (as it is used) creates counter-torque. This is why using extra electricity in a car hurts your fuel efficiency. So wind is needed to provide force (rather than just turning speed) to the turbines.
