Wow this game (in the making) has got me very excited and happy.
And it looks like i found it very close to the release (kind of)

I must say i am pritty much sold on the whole concept of the thing already.
I have taken a look around and i am left with a few questions left un answered, and prehaps a few suggestions.

Firstly: What will happen if all of the team die and i had no one left?
I for one would really dislike it if you kept 1 char no matter what and they became super high level and it didnt matter if they died or not.
will they be completely mortal and stay dead?

Secondly: Obviosly ninjas and samurai play a big influence on the character. But are you considering including other styles and nations.
The thing i liked about Mount and blade was the different types of nations avalable, giving the player choice of what to pick.
For example if you included norse men aswell as the samurai guys, i personaly would go with norse men. But thats just a personal preferance of myne.

Thirdly: will the experience be shared amoungst the entire team. or will it be more realistic and be awarded to the person doing the hard work.
Think oblivion style were skills are leveled through useage not by being chosen from a sheet. This style of experience would be much better suited to the game as it could become a very daughting task to individualy chose the skills of the entire team. were as the useage = experience would make life easy on the player.

Thats all i'll write for now, but i'm bursting to say more as this game has got me all excited.

Yeah, its game over if everybody dies, there are no immortal characters like in oblivion.

I'm not too decided yet on the visual styles, but I will try to make things varied as possible culturally, depends how much art resources we end up with. Nothing will be based entirely on real-world or historical cultures. Personally I thought the different cultures in mount and blade all looked the same.

As for leveling, there is a whole thread on that:
http://www.lofigames.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=105
Generally the characters earn what they do. The fighters will improve in combat skills. The medics who don't fight will improve their medical skills. But you will also have the option to control things a little if you wish.

Ahhh i like the idea of not basing your cultures on already existing ones actualy. it sounds good, but as long as there is a diversity of the cultures =]

This game has got me thinking about hundreds of different aspects and ideas.
would i be welcome to suggest ideas for you to use in later development?
as i just cant stop my brain making all these ideas

Lol, on the subject of dying and game over and stuff, I had a thought. Now, judging from my past failures at coming up with something you hadn't already thought of, I'm assuming you already have this idea, but just in case...

I was thinking, perhaps when you start a new game, rather than starting with creating your character(s), it starts with just generating the world. You can actually sit and watch the world unfold without your influence for as much or as little as you like.

Once the world is generated (you don't -have- to watch it unfold before playing, you just can due to the way my idea would have the system set up) you have your ui which includes a button to create a character. Now, I'd imagine a system that limits how many characters can be created and how often might be put in place to prevent someone from just plopping a few thousand starting characters into an area and owning everything. Anyway, upon creating the character, they spawn into this world like normal.

When all your characters are dead, it's not technically game over. Yes, a dead character is a dead character. However, you have the option to continue creating more characters and add them into this ongoing world. All your hard work is not gone. Your characters that you've developed and built up may be gone, but the world continues as you left it. (unless you decide to start a new game)

This would definitely make dying a major drawback (since you still lose your characters) but not quite so bad, since you still have all that stuff you built up in the world. (unless the stuff you built gets destroyed, too, but that's a whole separate matter)

Mind you, I do think a limiting factor of sorts should prevent you from just mass-creating characters (which removes the fear of death since you can just create fodder soldiers to send into battle). Perhaps as in-game time passes, the player builds up to X amount of character points. Creating a character expends one point. Perhaps a maximum of 10 points can be held at any given time.

I'm not sure how to limit characters. I want some to be recruited the normal way, ie meet an NPC and go "duh, u want join me?". But a way of making new custom characters would be good too, I'm thinking that would be related to your hometown somehow. Also there would be bulk recruitment methods like freeing a slave camp or prison. It certainly wouldn't be a free resource.

I had one idea, that if every character dies you can make a new character, and he acts as a descendant of some kind, who inherits everything from your dead character- his long lost uncle or whatever. Minus fees.
Or perhaps the option to start a new game but load the world state from an old save game, if things were going interesting when you died.

Personally, I'd prefer the latter. If you die, you die, but that doesn't mean the world comes to an end.

What if you were to set the game up as more of a 'god' type of game? Like, the player isn't this main character, the player is an influencing force in the game world. As an influencing force, you actually have stats that affect your ability to influence the world. One of these stats could limit how many avatars (characters) you can spawn into this world. Then, the player's 'character' is this disembodied being that simply holds all the player's global advancement. Then, your characters can die off left and right, and you, yourself, are still there.

The stats could include things like being able to make more custom characters, being able to make slightly stronger custom characters (within reason, of course) and other such things. Perhaps you could even come up with some really creative ways for the player to affect the world directly, but in a very subtle way.

No that would loose my intentions for the gameplay, the feeling of characters being precious, saving your buddies and all that.

Ya, I can see where you're coming from on that. Would definitely change the feel of the game quite a bit. However, I do like the idea of the world going on whether you're character lives on or not. Provides some incentive to keep playing even if you die, but still making it so that dying really sucks. Just hard to come up with a good system to limit the character creation in mid-game.

I do like the idea of tying it to your hometown, but what if that town gets annihilated? It seems like a potentially bad idea to tie a character too much to something in the game world when the world is constantly changing in a very uncontrollable way.

Hm...might just limit how many avatars (player-made characters) that you can have at once. Then limit how often you can make replacement characters in-game. Mind you, this limit applies only to the custom-made characters, it doesn't limit npc's who join you in any way. You can still build up an army of loyal followers, but you can only pull a few characters out of thin air to help you. This provides the player with the ability to replace dead characters, but you still lose all their stats and skills, and you can only replace them so often.

Another thought is to have the player create a 'faction' that gains reputation in the world based on the actions of those in it, and higher reputation causes the player to gather 'followers'. Increasing the leadership stat of those leading the faction as well as increasing the faction's reputation causes followers to appear more often. Each follower gathered can be a player-made character or can be auto-generated.

The faction type can also be selected at the beginning. Faction types can include things like a guild, a town or even a family line. These could affect how you acquire followers. A guild could gather followers through the reputation and leadership, a family through birth and marriages, a town through a mesh of both reputation and reproduction.

One idea: simply determine what the world would be like ten years from the PC's death for the next character, based on which factions were strongest and what they tended to do with their power.

The idea was inspired by Dwarf Fortress; a game in which the dev has thought of literally everything. It's like a cross between dungeon keeper, sim city, the hobbit and nethack that somehow works and is extremely entertaining.

I'm still wondering how the AI for your friends works. Will you select 1 specifc character who will be the "hero" who's son will be the heir, thus if someone dissagreas with the "hero" they will not performe the asked order, you don't control the hero at all, except he will have no problem doing anything you ask him to.
