If we're a dying breed then how would you explain the immense success of mount and blade? Those type of gamers played mount and blade because of the impressive game play, not the mediocre graphics...

And then consider even DayZ? It was all about the gameplay (and second the bandwagon). The graphics, and even the controls, were mediocre at best.

Sebastian said: Oh there are still plenty of content gamers, like myself, still around. Problem is, we are a dying breed. If Chris were to tap into the COD generation, it could vastly improve his monetary standing. Like an investment, put a little money into one thing, hoping to strike it rich in returns. Then you have all the money needed for content updates, in theory. But, hey, it's not like I've been here before, and I'm nobody special. In the end, it's all up to the judgement of Chris.
The increase in popularity of indie games is proof that content gamera are not dying, but thriving. That is why sites like steam and GOG.com are investing in these types of games (They lack polish, but there content is in depth as a 90s era game.

Most games that focus on graphics tend to be released with much of the content missing/lacing and are more likely to contain more bugs. (because they focused more on the graphics and later had to rush)

Also, there might be regional factors too. For example many recent Eastern European games like Stalker,Metro 2033 and Arma II had this feel to it that was very different from many of the games from the US. Many gamers I've talked to never heard of any of those games, however most of 'em loved COD, Battlefield or Rainbow six. Many non-pc US gamers never actually heard of some of the well known European games. So perhaps a type of game stagnation verifying by region is to blame. (i.e. when there is a lack of new ideas/ unique style which causes the devs just churn out clones of game types (cookie-cut))

*Shiny* sells, but in the end it is the games with content that are remembered.

My info may be a bit outdated then, or perhaps a bit too localized. It was my understanding we are still marinating in the FPS era. If we are, in fact, headed full circle, HUZZAH!!!! I'm not gonna hold my breath though.

I saw an awesome article about this recently. About how the most successful games on kickstarter are about 'getting back to the old-school'. We are all paying for nostaligia and now instead of paying publishers to churn out the same old crap we are paying the developers directly to churn out the same stuff that we grew up with.

The article makes the point far better than I do, but the main point is that there really ISN'T this huge push to innovation among kickstarter that has really been touted out there and that it isn't necessarily the publishers who were standing in front of innovation but ourselves. And as long as the crap that I witness sells as well as it does then I think I have to agree.

But that is not to say I dislike nostalgia.

The real purpose of the new artwork is not simple shinyness as you might think.
1- Its to flesh out the individual factions and populate the world properly. I think of the current state of the game world as a place-holder.
2- I need more building models and stuff anyway to finish the base building features
3- More detail and variety for characters means better customisation, and customisation and variety is key to making the player love their characters, which is key to the game itself. Its no good when they all look the same.

I think its because the nostalgic old games WERE the innovative games, and many of the classics created innovative features and gameplay that was never done again. There are super old games that far surpass the complexity of anything since. Look at Sundog, original war, megatraveller, wasteland, Xcom apocalypse to name a few.

That all makes sense, but until the update after that makes that diverse, populated world function as an interactive dynamic system with an actual economy and even more complex faction relations it doesn't seem like there will be any real new hooks for people to keep or start playing.

Good point... I hadn't thought of it that way.

Here's another point of view for yall. Take a comparative look at one of these indie games and one of the big shooters. Be sure to pick an indie game with a load of content. I'm wanting to say Minecraft, which seems pretty content heavy to me. It's going for $26.95 right now as opposed to one of the post Modern Warfare Call of Duty titles hitting for 50 to 60 dollars. And I realize that Minecraft isn't a great example, It's really only a handful of features, but with those features, you have neigh infinite possibilities. If we take a look at this aspect, we can pretty clearly see what we seem to put a value on. And I could be wrong here. The more I think about it, the more I tend to want to hang it on the developers intentions. It's my understanding that Indie developers aren't really looking to strike it rich, they make these games because they want to. But still, Steam, and the like, is.

I also want to attribute indie success to the price. In our economy, not everyone, including me, has the cash to go out and buy one of the newest mainstream game. But damned if I don't want something to play. One of the reasons I consider myself as a somewhat retro gamer. I think that's all I have to say for now.

Please use the search box to look for a similar post before creating a new one. Also the Feature Requests sub-forum is for the requesting of features. (Topic merged)

On November 10th, Chris mentioned that he was working on the male/female high poly based models.
Chris said: Once I have all the new character models and armours, the factions will be overhauled. There will be a greater number and variety of factions and they will be more interesting.

It seems that version 0.40 will focus on buildings and crafting, as well as balancing the NPCs in towns. So I believe that females will not make their appearance until the housing and crafting framework is at least in place. (and stable)

Love it  +1 for you, sir.

Though I think there's some kind of phrase in the Forum Rules about gender based discrimination or something, so be careful

Congratulations you just won 5 internetz.

Also, dont make all the fancy stuff first, I mean work on what you want to work on Chris!
I want you to not be stressed, but make the game in the way you want it to :D!
And well, it saddens me that all those people left the game, but hey they will come back once Chris adds more content and they will check the new game out! :D

On another note, how about we all as a little ceremony maybe delete our saves like 30 minutes before Chris makes the final update and the game goes live? :)
Then all us "regulars" could maybe start a thread and discuss the good old days where you didn't get paid for protecting the caravan, or there was no ranged weapons or hell even females! And maybe together we could then share our experiences and say if the game turned out the way we wanted it to or how we thought it would all turn out.

I'm gonna delete my save when the full game is released and then see how much better it is to play now that its 1.0 instead of 0.33 :D
