I'm going to list whats been going on with the development at the moment, because its awesome.

[*]You can build a building anywhere outside a town. Later if you build near a town, you will have to pay taxes.
[*]You need building materials to build with. You will have to buy them, its gonna cost around 10k for a small shack.
[*]You can lock the doors of your building to keep enemies out. If you set your characters to defensive mode, then they won't try to open the door and run outside to fight the bandits.
[*]Enemies who cant get in will start to bash the door down. Door toughness will eventually be something you can upgrade and research.
[*]You can build storage boxes to keep your extra junk

What I still need to do:
[*]I still need to add beds, so your wounded guys can heal faster in a safe place.
[*]I want you to be able to buy an existing building in a town. This has some bug potential though regarding anyone who might already be living there.

Then I will make the new release. Not long now, a couple weeks, maybe less.

For the next release after that we will have:
[*]prospecting + mining (mostly done already, but i don't want to release it without the rest)
[*]machine to turn ore into building materials and metal
[*]research
[*]crafting weapons and armour

And then I will just be adding more and more different buildings and functions and stuff to build and research.

Seems great.
The base building and research/upgrade features were the things that primarily drew me to this game. I can't wait :D

Excellent stuff here. What will dictate the town's boundaries, will there be some sort of town line?

If I can see this town does that mean I am in its range? more specifically, if I build exactly in the middle of Brink and Clownsteady (where I can barely see either) will I be in their area of effect?

Further, can I 'refuse' taxes and have them attempt to forcibly extract my money or would you handle it as an automatic electronic deduction?

That would be fun, specially if you're powerful enough to fight back.

Is conquering towns planned to be implemented? That would be nice as well.

Yeah, the idea is that you can deny them if you are strong enough to stand up and fight. It wont just be those taxes either, other factions, cults and even bandits may come along demanding taxes or tribute. You will be harassed.

Do you have any idea when the next update will be? I'm not trying to rush your or anything, I'm just curious.

Harassment is sounding fun. Hopefully it is sufficiently bad that building within a towns radius is a very viable alternative just for the protection aspect. I'd love to become the target of big bandit gangs and get forced out of my home.

Wonder if you could start a war by building a lucrative business between two major cities...

So my fort can have a Cult leader "landlord" that will demand a lot of money, and if I don't pay the rent he will try to sacrifice my people to his emu god (Emuzoole the face pecker)?

Also, will taxes in cities very by the wealth of the character or the size/amount of structures they own?

Would it be possible for NPC's to build their own cities and, if that city is too close to yours, could you charge them taxes for it?

Yes, that will be the idea anyway.

No, but I plan to add a feature where a weaker village or faction can contract you for protection.
