Okay, so when I showed up joining an army was a core intended feature: (quote from the web archive of the lofigames homepage from may 2010)
Variation and possibilities of gameplay. Be good, be evil, be a business man, be a thief, live in a town, live in the desert, join the army, fight the army, travel alone, travel in hordes, build a fortress, raze a city.
This was a feature that really excited me, hell it was this block that sold the game for me. So I have to ask: What ever happened to it? Its nonexistence makes 1.0 pretty bittersweet for me (well, that and knowing I won't be getting any new gameplay to toy with). I get dropping luxury features, but this was something I saw as a core mechanic. The much needed stepping-stone for new players and especially combat-driven play-throughs.

That said, I'd like to add that among the actual luxury features it's great that only 2 were dropped. Controller support's a bit of a pain for some, I suppose, but it's honestly rather easy to cover externally using an AutoHotkey script or controller remapping software (Logitech's controller drivers come with one, other manufacturers might do similar things). And while mounts, hatching, and taming didn't end up panning out we did still get animals so we're not missing much there.
