I know it's still extremely early in the development process, but I'm interested to know if you plan to release a modding tool at some point or help to support a modding community for Kenshi.
With such a massive open world and such interesting gameplay mechanics, it seems like a game the modding community could really get behind.

In the FAQ it says "Yes, the game is totally data driven and will be released with the same editors that are used to make the game". So does this mean it will be possible to create total-conversion mods that actually change the core game mechanics? Like for example: "Kenshi: the turn-based Trading Card racing game"?
Or for a more realistic example, you said you wouldn't include magic. But if some users really want to use magic could they create a mod that implements new mechanics in order to use magic?

i don't think this implements that you can convert kenshi into a turn-based or even a card-game. but, maybe you could (meant as a joke) convert it to a pokemon fighting game
.
(changing skins, characters, textures, towns, terrain, etc.)
i'm not a modder myself, but this could increase the awesomeness of this game exponentially
. (yes i like the word awesome
).

Well, he said the modding kit will contain the tools he used to create the game himself. That would at least imply that with a great deal of patience and perseverance you could strip down the game to it's most basic form, removing all NPCs, towns, weapons, and non-hardcoded stuff, then rebuild everything in the way you want.
If it's possible, I would certainly try to do something like that myself. though I'd probably start with creating some magic, that's one of the first things I modded into Mount&Blade aswell

as i said, i am not a moder myself....you seems to be the expert on this term! if you would convert the later kenshi maybe into a magical game, then i would gladly test your mod^^.
i own mount & blade myself and play many mods...love them all! mount and blade is a great game, but the several mods release make the game even more great.
one of my favorites for example (!) are: prohesy of endor, brytenwalda, 1755 old frontier, shogun, sword of damocles and ad 1257
.
greetings

By no means do I think of myself as an expert, I just enjoy tinkering with stuff until it breaks
. I also like to mess around with coding. Made some weird Cortex Command shit back in the days.
By the way, if you enjoy playing mods, you might want to check out mine? It's only V0.2, but I've got a bit of magic in there, a bit of undead, redone every faction, stuff like that. The magic system is overpowered right now, but I'm rehauling it completely to improve balancing. It's called Mount&Stick, it was greatly inspired by The Order of the Stick, a webcomic of which you may or may not have heard. Don't worry, you don't need to know it in order to play the mod, though I am currently including some easter eggs for those who do. And if you'd like to contribute, leave a message in that forum thread, we're still looking for people to leave constructive feedback regarding balancing and stuff like that.
I also enjoy playing mods on Mount&Blade. Sword of Damocles and Prophesy of Pendor both top my list. SoD, because of the whole "kingdom management" thing and PoP for being so damn beautiful. Then comes Custom Settlements (there's just something about creating and ruling a kingdom that attracts me, which is why I'm so excited about Kenshi). As for the other mods, I usually play them for a few days, but then see another, shinier mod and lose interest. Though the gunpowder mods never really sparked my interest, I played one or two and the reloads and low accuracy made the gun feel so clumsy. I know that's a realistic depiction, but I simply don't enjoy that kind of weaponry.
And if/when (depending on how busy it gets here) I make a mod for Kenshi, you may certainly test and play it.

Yeah you can do just about anything, but there is no scripting language so you cant change anything hard-coded. You can totally rebalance the game, add/remove items, characters, buildings, towns etc. At the present time, there is no mod support for creating animations/animated characters, but I will add that sometime when i can. Editing terrain would be a ballache too, if you wanted to go down that road, though its not impossible.

Oh. Well perhaps you might consider adding a scripting language later on? Doesn't have to be anything fancy, but I understand if it's not possible.
Although, is it possible to create your own quest using the modding tools? I can think of a few ways to simulate/track magic stats via quests (if the usual quest conditions and rewards system applies).
Anyway, I guess I'll find out whether or no that's possible once the game and modding tools have been released. Nothing to do now but wait.
But whatever you do, first focus on making the game itself
. You can always worry about extra modding mechanics later.
