that saying alone means u do not need to play alpha
man these shitty mmos like wow have made the word alpha mean nothing
an alpha is a game that runs it doesnt even have to run well as long as it runs... thats ALL an alpha is and not a "passible" thing >.<

I think you're confusing "alpha" with "final* release" here, or at least you are making that impression. I'll try to clarify.
First of all, an alpha version means the project is in a bare-bones state, there is no such thing as a "passable" alpha version. An alpha version differs from a beta version in that a beta version already has (almost) all mechanics implemented, and only needs to go through a decent balance testing.
Secondly, and this might be what caused the confusion, Chris is using "alpha" in the true sense of the word, and not the marketing-department's "alpha". In times long past, games usually came with a thing called a "demo", which was a small section of gameplay available for free, so people could test before they bought. Nowadays big companies have renamed "demo" to "alpha" (or "beta") and charge people extra money for the "privilege" of "testing" the game. In other words, marketing-"alpha", just means expensive demo/early access to the game. But those games are most often already close to completion, so the term "alpha-version" is actually (purposefully) misapplied by the publishers.
I hope this clear up any confusion, if it didn't (or caused even more confusion

) you need only ask and more walls of text will magically appear on this thread, answering even more questions

.
*final in the sense of "all work is done", so after a final release bug-patches and DLC etc. might still appear.
