I know this is random but i just wanted to say all the total war games from sega have mastered the art of Real time/Turn Based gameplay it is one of the most fluent and well made engines ive ever used :D But i have to agree with chris that most other games lack what it really needs which is in the combat department (this is gonna be way out in left field so be ready for a crazy switch) for example take a look at Arma 2 a realistic "Combat Simulator" love the game but the devs at bohemia forgot a few things while making a "realistic" game see everything was nice bullet drop, sonic boom from jets, Realistic looking weapons and how they would react and big scale battles on an epic map. but they got so wrapped up in how things work that they slacked off on a realistic working AI dont get me wrong the Ai is pretty smart when you know how to use them but it gets pretty dumbed down when you can walk in front of an enemy (Even on Expert) And dance for a good 6 seconds before they decide to acknowledge you and then another 2 seconds before they fire also that they look retarded doing about 50 circles before lining up behind cover and a bunch of random spins before moving when under fire. Its like the Ai is saying to itself "EVASIVE ACTION!! EVASSSSIIVVVEEE ACTTTIONNN!" but on to the models and animation they are just horrible you cant have a so called "realistic life like" game with people look and move like maniquins (Think thats how you spell it) but it completely kills it. Im not a big graphics are important gamer but i mean cmon atleast make it move realisticly. but my point is when you attempt to make a game you must look at the core of what really makes a game good Combat, Freedom, Dialogue, Intelligent AI, and Storyline (And the other two that are important but not more than the ones above are Awesome models and Animation) those are the main 5 factors that builds a good game and lacking in any of them will just make your game turn into a brown stain on the carpet and be refrenced badly like (Which we all do) "Dragon age was good but Combat was icky". But here are a few of the major games that followed the 5 important steps and didnt lack in any of the departments. The Witcher 2, all the Assassins Creeds, and the last two arent rpgs but Gta 4 and both Red Dead games. But this is to long so ill just finish by saying i know this rant was mainly random and about shooters and im sorry lol but i just wanted to maybe help some future devs out there who might be following Kenshi and as well just show what makes a good game and what you cant lack in. Just remember one of the steps without the other will always and i mean always make your game forgetable or leave a bad taste in the players mouth.

(By the way Turn based combat will only work on final fantasy games because they were one the first to ever do it and it was nice back then cause it was a new way of play but in this day and age theres no excuse for it i think its a dead and gone fighting engine and should be completely scraped)

I miss quality turn-based games, and hope they never die out.
I assume the reason you feel they are outdated is that you are mainly an FPS player, as you yourself stated.

I'm a huge fan of the Heroes of Might and Magic games. So I'm on Syn's side here, turn based combat works (even nowadays lol)

You should always proofread carefully to make sure you didn't any words out.

Well not really, I would say im an rpg player opposed to Fps but its just hard to get an Rpg that hits on all cylinders. And yeah your kinda right L33t Might and Magic did and still does do a good job on it.

Jagged Alliance was a great turn-based shooter. I love Arma II, but yeah the AI is stupid, my driver lodged our vehicle in a stonewall and then when he got free he would drive into it again. ( He did this several times then died.....I called an artillery strike on him  ) I didn't like NWN II and Dragon ages combat style (I did eventually tolerate it), and when playing Might and Magic VI & VII I never used turn-based mode. To be honest I never really liked turn-based mode (big battles REALLY sucked) but I think that (at times) it is a very good feature and should have a future (but real-time with a pause feature I do prefer). I prefer myself to be a balanced RPG/FPS player, but I use the FPS term loosely( Call of Duty shall never find itself placed upon my desktop (Medal of Honor, as well). Basically, I am primary a real-time player, but had many a good time with turn-based games. :)

I was talking about the Heroes of might and magic series not the old might and magic (in case you were replying to my comment ;) )

I never got myself to play arma because of the comments I read everywhere lol

Final fantasy type turnbased is a different thing, those are definately outdated and I don't see how they bring any fun, they just feel like chores. Final fantasy battles are something you just endure so you can continue on with the story.

A good turn based battle should feel a little like playing a game of chess, there should be tension in it. jagged alliance 2 and temple of elemental evil are the kings of turn-based for me.

All of the Final Fantasy games were one button games. There weren't enough changes in strategy needed to kill whatever you ran into. I loved 7th Saga because you could use the L button to select so you could play it one handed, an even lazier button presser.

FF8 and 10 for me.
I didn't really care for the story. I liked the combat honestly, and progression of characters.

I'm not a big fan of Final Fantasy battles either. Now Final Fantasy Tactics has some good gameplay though. That kind of turn based game I can get behind.

Loved Final Fantasy Tactics.

Enjoyed Baulders Gate and Baulders Gate 2.

I miss games like Fallout and Fallout 2. :( Really wish Fallout 3 was a true fallout game lol.

Nah, I knew what you were talking about, but it reminded me of the old M&M series with the turn-based mode button. I never used that button, but M&M had some great moments. ( Armageddon spell )
