On the topic of a new critter costing something like $1K:

have you considered asking for community support? I am sure many members here would be happy to do some 3d modeling and skinning for you for free, or for a free copy of the game, or something along those lines. This would cost very little or nothing, and give the community something to do to get names in the credits and the likes.
