Zzzt. There was a sudden tremor that shook my being into waking. Dark shutters fluttered open as my glassy eyes adjusted and sharpened leaving me to stare up at a world foreign to me. The sky was darkened with deposits of black and dust as I laid there against a stony surface that pressed against something below my sight. Slowly but surely, my circuits ignited and there was a mechanical whirling coming from within as I witnessed the rest of my body, a coppery shell that had limbs and a torso. – How strange it was to be encapsulated in such a form, yet so fascinating as I felt the electricity in these formations that were of me quiver in delight. My memory banks flickered on and there was not much information to be had. . I knew nothing of value, but it seemed I possessed a liquid quality inside of my body that had been accessed somehow and ignited to turn on my vital presence.

Through great difficulty at first, I turned my shape to a side and activated the limb nearest to my torso, a metallic hand outstretched wonderfully in the ashen dust that covered me like a blanket. In great mystification, I watched as the dust fell from the arm, each granular cent descending without fear to the dark sandy land beneath me. More and more did my presence seem to excite and whirl with activity, though I knew not of the why or the how. Perhaps most difficult was to stand, as either ages of time had passed or I had simply forgotten how, but my metallic props shook with great difficulty as it held the weight of the form I had become – was – am. Supporting myself on a misshapen alcove of dark earth, did I finally come to stature and did my data fill my memory banks of the exquisite ecstasy it was to simply be – to exist. My body hungered for nothing, but the electrical systems in my mind. . There was desire for more, to see more, to learn more.

Taking my first step was a challenge but became a marvel as I realized how this body was formed of metal and there were compression bucklers that tensed and contracted as I began to move forward. At first, it seemed the world would be this ashen land before me as my frame strained from inactivity, but before I knew it, I was moving at a pace faster and faster and my sharpened eyes were taking all of the sights in and recording them into my memory banks for later display. There was elation in my movements, quickness, and an eagerness to keep on moving. Voracity was my lifeblood and soon I found that there existed more than just the blackened earth, but a whole field of sharpened and swaying grass that ranged from lovely amber to an ever more vibrant green. At my top velocity did I run through these moving beings, feeling some trampled underfoot before I stopped and stared at the mystery of such a thing. Why did it not recede back and begin living once more? Questions and queries filled my banks and I slowly stepped out of the peaceful reeds of wonder that seemed to wave at me like friendly neighbors.

As I looked above, I found the sky had changed as well. It was now a cerulean that was deep in splendor and the sharpness of my sight could see that it went on and on for what seemed an eternity. The ground was different too from the blackened earth. It was softer as my feet dug in if I were to stand in one place for too long. Such mysteries and such marvels existed in this world that was mine – Or was it mine? Another query for the banks – One I decided I would remedy.

Moving along what looked to be a path carved out just for my pleasure, I happened to see a small creature surrounded by others, hopping and slurping with their tongues. Gradually, my speech unit unfurled and I spoke towards them in a voice that sounded stony yet firm, electronic and calm, “Hello. Creatures. I. see. You. Creatures.” My dark shutters fluttered at first to see if they recognized my speech, but the little river beings seemed preoccupied with their playful movement. – But how thankful I was that other beings existed that I watched with certain peace that I was not alone. – Then began the processes of curiosity, if I were not the only one of my kind. What wisdom could this one learn from another such as I? Deeper did my elation excite my circuits and cause me to begin running through the fields as a radiant light emerged above me.

At first I was in shock at such a thing, as a white block of composition clearly moved out of the way for the blinding eye to stare at me solidly. Looking back at it with my clarity, I could see it as well as it could see me, but there was no hostility. Sensors on my body seemed to even enjoy the warmth that was carried by the loving energy I had found in its’ existence. Once again, my electronic speech operator engaged, “Hello. I. Am. Happy.” But it did not move and I did not mind it not responding as there was a gust of decayed plant-like matter that swayed in the short distance and I found myself, once again, intrigued.

Moving with deliberateness and adventure in each step and the various shapes and life forms that swayed in this world of delight, and I noticed how the wondrous ball of light shone on my coppery body and gave my presence a shininess that caused me to be stunned in internal laughter. “Hah. Hah. Hah.” My speech unit automatically had engaged and I felt the feeling to be stunningly impressive and enjoyable. To laugh – My memory banks filling in the blanks for me – was a blessing. Before long, I set myself across the path once more until I found what looked to be like a mountain of movement. There was smoke coming from multiple areas within and my unit feared that the large mountainous being was in pain, as I – the form I possessed – could not tolerate such heat bearably. Moving quickly, I came into sight of something rather peculiar. The mountainous walls were made of different composites of metals and forged into being – Perhaps like myself. Moving excitedly to see if there was another like me somewhere nearby, I found the mouth of the wall-like structure gleaming the light of the rays of the bright and positive ball above.

Standing there in awe, I watched as it slowly shook and trembled with movement, chains and other mechanisms moving in unison to perhaps speak to me. . But that was not so. Something greater occurred! Other smaller beings emerged from the mouth in friendly disposition to greet me with their shiny encapsulated bodies like mine, but with different textures on their face-units and grapplers. They also wielded large metal pieces that gleamed in the sunlight and I stood there silently in awe until my speech operator could not contain itself, “Hah. Hah. Hah!~” Elation pouring out from my mechanical form as I welcomed the beings. As they spotted my presence, they changed their formation and moved quickly to me speaking words unknown to me, I communicated, “Hello. I. Am. Happy. To—“

One of the metal pieces struck across my sight and my form crumbled to the ground stunned at the action. “Agent of Darkness! You defile this very land! You shall pay with your life!,” spoke the largest of the group as I attempted to understand the meaning. But more and more blows were dealt to my coppery carapace and I could feel intense shocks of electricity burning in the places they deformed and destroyed circuits.

“Filthy skeleton! Probably a spy. . Let’s rip it to pieces and hang it from the wall!,” again spoke the largest as they began striking off my form into pieces as a black syrupy lifeblood dripped out from the artificial orifices created by the angry beings much unlike myself until I felt my consciousness begin to slip. Before my sight became darkness and my memory banks emptied into nothingness, I whispered through the speech module, “I. Was. Happy. To. Live.”
