Bugmaster does not react to Assassination attempts.

I saw the bounty that the bugmaster had and I decided to look for him. I decided to check around the area with a single squad member(my character) and left the rest to wait by my base. Since I had about 40 stealth I was able to get inside the tower where bugmaster lives and bypass its spiders. once inside I checked out his stats and saw that I could not beat it, so I decided to try assassinating him. I had 0 assassination skill points and 0% of actually succeeding. I told myself I might as well try it then run back home. I hit him in the back and he did not react, so I kept on trying. After many many attempts I reached 80 assassination and was able to knock him out, but not once did he react to me constantly hitting him in the back.
