I experienced a similar problem today - the game crashed when I was galavanting around Brink - I'd only recently discovered the area. The game continued to crash almost as soon as I reloaded and ran extremely slow when it was working. I read the advice here. I then manually deleted the overlay files and validated the game through the Steam interface for Kenshi. After restarting, the game ran as expected. I've had the game about 10 days and have no mods installed (Windows 8.1).

When I returned to the Brink area I had to delete and validate once again after a crash and sluggish performance. If it happens again I'll submit the log. Best wishes to your test team

Okay, I returned to Brink from the Heft area and had to delete overlay files and then validate. However, today when I played the game I attempted to travel from Brink to Black Scratch. After a few run ins with Reavers en route the game slowed down and crashed just as I arrived at Black scratch heavily laden with loot. Please find the game log attached. I can tolerate the delete/validate routine if it's just once every four-five days when I return to the Brink area, but if I have to go through that malarkey every time I load the game just to play in the Brink area then this is a serious impairment on how the game operates! :(

Please advise if there is anything I can do to make it possible to play the game (near Brink) without having to go through the delete/validate routine daily.

PC: Windows 8.1, no mods.

Update: The game keeps crashing whilst I attempt to play in Black Scratch. Play is extremely sluggish and then !SPLAT! it just crashes after about 10-20 minutes from start. Currently, I can't play that particular series (my main squad) because I'm trapped in Black Scratch. I feel like the little mobs whose speech bubble says "I can't get out!" :?

I've had to abandon my 'main squad' game...

Can you not offer me any solution(s) on how to retrieve those characters? It would appear the game is not currently playable in the Brink/Black Scratch areas. Are there any other areas where the game freezes/crashes?

Have you tried importing the game with the reset positions option selected? That should move all your characters out of the affected area, hopefully allowing you to continue the game.

Thanks for the suggestion, Shidan. I tried it today and it placed the squad for that game not far from their homebase (near The Hub) which would have enabled me to continue to play, but not in the area I wished to explore. I paid for a game which claims to include the area to the south east of the UC realms... However, the suggestion is not a fix for the bug. Excuse me, but I had expected the game producer's website to address reported bugs...

I started another game and experienced several crashes and bugs with that series too. I just stopped playing that game when I returned to my homebase to find that the repaired buildings in The Hub had reverted back to their original dilapidated state and the entire armory and stocks I had stored had been lost. If I had the heart I'd have to sift through the saves from over two days' worth of games in order to discover the point where the buildings had been 'demolished'. That could might take me weeks of my spare time.

I've come to the conclusion that Kenshi is a work of genius, but heavily flawed in that the game is so buggy one cannot expect to finish a game without returning several times to earlier saves. There is little reliability/stability for world states and the software producers seem not to know what causes the errors that are reported. The whole game is a brilliant concept, but that's the problem - the concept has not been fully implemented. However, Lofi Games are quite happy to sell the game as a finished product when it's clearly not at that stage; that's extremely disappointing as is the lack lustre response to reported bugs on their site.
