Hah, I know this one! I've spoiler'd the answer so others can give it a try as well.
[spoiler]It's iron (some other metals/ores could also be valid answers though). The womb is the Earth, the ores get smelted in a fire, worked upon by hammers, and turned into weapons.[/spoiler] (so apparently spoiler tags *still* don't work, so I've made the text the same colour as the background, highlight to view)
