The release is coming soon now on the 31st, and I'm making the final build now, and going to be starting "beta" testing to find any last minute, crippling bugs.

Its going to be release on Desura (its like steam for indies), and also on the lo-fi games site using a payment handler.

I don't yet know where to host the demo. Desura will host a demo, but you will probably need Desura installed to play it, so I want to also host a standalone demo too. It will be about 600mb.

Does anyone know any good places to host large downloads? Somewhere with decent speeds, that won't hassle people with their ads. Doesn't have to be free.

Dropbox might work, but you could run into problems with having too many users trying to download at once, since you would essentially be leveraging an "extra" feature.

BitTorrents might be feasible, though some ISPs might throttle the traffic.

Finally, after a lot of searching, swmirror is a company that is based on this kind of hosting. I could not find any mention of ads though, so I have no idea for how they measure on that requirement.

If you're planning to do a lot of small patches very often, I'd suggest a Subversion (SVN) server thing. There are a couple of good quality providers out there, though the only free ones I know of are sourceforge and googlecode, which both require your code to be open source, so you'll probably want to get a paid one.

To cut hosting costs a p2p-type system could be used, though I don't know of any that would also require users to purchase the game before gaining access to the files. Yeah, I'm guilty, the only P2Ps I've got experience with are piratebay and isohunt and the likes, but that's not the kind of distribution you're looking for right now, eh?

I suppose you could also use Steam, but as I understand they take a rather substantial amount of money for themselves, so that might not be optimal this early in development (I do hope a Steam release is coming when the game is finished though)

Also, I am looking forward to the 31st, good luck with beta testing the alpha test version!

Steam only do finished games, and SVN isn't suitable for the general public to use.

I'll go for file planet then, and make a torrent too as a backup.

FileShack and FileFront are also good choices, and downloading doesn't require registration like Fileplanet.

Gamefront ftw :)

The other indie WIP game Minerwars uses Gamefront, Atomicgamer and a torrent, if that helps :)

Hi,

do you know what time this game will be released? Or you release it when you are ready for it?

Ah, like that. Well, I have no idea, and even if I did, the times probably wouldn't match what with the whole time-zone differing thingy.

Though when the matter of exact timing in releases is brought up I usually assume they mean 23.59 (I'm sure you guys can convert to am/pm yourself, it's just before midnight) in my local time. I don't know if it's because I live in Belgium or because they purposefully release at that moment to win an extra day of frantic bugtesting, but that's usually about the time (my local time) it's released.

Though I'm sure Chris will try to release as soon as possible. Also, in very positive news, I just learned that school's off monday, tuesday and wednessday so I'll be able to play once it's released! (And buy it after having checked out the demo, gotta stick to what few principles I have left :P )

Hmm, september 10, wasn't that around the time RPS did an article about Kenshi? Chris had better prepare the forum servers for a huge activity boost. I hope the forums don't crash :(

Oh, but I think there'll be a lot more than 300 people online if/when RPS does a piece on "[pun]: Kenshi released" followed by a bit of nice and funny text, and a trailer, and a comment section full of good responses.

Oh, and if your internet is slow, you could always try to get the file from a public hotspot (if you have a laptop), or use a USB stick and download the file from a place with free internet-connected computers (like a university, though I suppose they'll be closed during the holiday weekend as well, I know UHasselt is).
