Very interesting question. I also want to know the answer.
The “Start your own faction” feature really engrossed me to the game. I love micromanagement, diplomacy and starting campaigns. I am massive fan of Hearts of Iron and other Grand Strategy games; therefore I would love to hear more. From what I have gathered, there will be a bandit faction and I am sure there will be more. If I started my own faction, will I be able to communicate with the bandit faction and create some sort of pact? Will I be able to converse with towns and create trading routes for resources that can help my research and so forth?

It would be very interesting if, through 'aligning' our faction with other criminal/bandit/lawless factions and what laws/system of government we decide to use etc. we could ourselves become bandits and found a bandit settlement, a kind of 'neutral' town where there are few if any laws. Life in such a place would be dangerous for your average person to say the least, but potentially extremely profitable by being able to sell stolen items or items which it may be illegal to sell in other more lawful areas. I imagine people with wealth in such a place would establish gangs and maybe even go as far as 'dividing' up a large settlement into areas owned by the major gangs, so that they aren't mugged on the street in broad daylight.
Found/capture several settlements and you could start off a lawless bandit civilisation!
A lawless faction like this with gang warfare common in its cities would be dangerous for average people, but I would expect them to be able to field a very skilled army due to the fertile recruiting grounds a constant combat environment would produce - and doctors being close at hand.
It is amazing to think that in-city gang warfare could happen dynamicly under such a system. The more I think about this game the better it gets!

In lawless cities with lots of fighting, life could become very profitable for a doctor who doesn't ask too many questions and keeps a neutral stance. But a lawless civilization would be very difficult to realistically create. Because if every city is ruled by the gangs controlling it, there's no real government to speak of to control the "civilization" as a whole. Unless one gang manages to get control over multiple cities, but then they would create their own laws to keep the power, and then its no longer a lawless civilization.
Though I'm very interested in knowing if there will be religions. And if it would be possible to start your own religion, and try to convert people to join it. In the beginning you would be seen more as a cult or sect than a true religion. but as your character/faction becomes more successful and known, more people will flock to him/her (like Jesus Christ who got more fans when he got famous
)
EDIT: And I really hope modding tools are released with the game, so people can try to make the things they want to see themselves.

Basically you are a faction from the start. Your relationship with others will be affected by deeds mostly, do jobs or help them in battle and they will like you more. If you want to rile them up you can spare one of their men and say "go back to your masters and tell them they suck!" kind of thing.
Faction relation wont be a simple like/dislike number. There will be separate stats for trust, respect, anger, fear. A faction may ally with you purely out of fear and then stab you in the back, or their temporary anger at your deeds may make them over-aggressive for a while.
And yes, you can be a bandit faction. And being a lawless settlement would simply be a matter of being on negative terms with the lawful governments etc. Lawlessness and morals are separate things after all, you could be a robin-hood type maybe.
Yes there will be easy modding support.

Oh cool! Can you spare one of their men and say "go back and tell your masters that I'm feeling charitable right now and want to talk peace." ? Not as bad ass sure, but generally far more productive.
Oh yeah, I think I asked this in the ModDB comments but those are damn annoying to keep track of.
Is there still going to be options like sparing/saving injured enemies from death in order to enslave them and/or attempting to convince them to your faction?

Hi all !
Will faction AI be able to use tactics such as *the enemy of my enemy is my friend* and so forth ?
If so,will the AI be sophisticated enough to determine proper use of diplomacy (is there a rigorous diplomacy feature?) to ensure its factions survival ?
Is it going to be at all possible for factions to hold their own indefinately without player interjection or are they going to be prone to ultimately be destroyed by the one mega faction?
This has been a major flaw for all games I've played with this type of feature from Age Of Wonders,Total War,Mount and Blade Warband, list goes on.
I don't like the idea of a game world revolving/evolving around the player.Rather the player should be evolving to a changing game world.
Not to be misunderstood, yes the AI should be considering the player faction, but the player faction should not always be the number one target at expense of all else.
I guess what I'm asking is,will all factions have a chance to survive without player interaction/interjection?
Sorry if this has been asked before but, what is the devs views on consumers editing game files/modding ?
I'm fine with it being off limits, but it could help further the game having a dedicated modders forum later on down the track.
Sorry for my long post

There will be complete mod support, and (almost) all tools used to make the game will be available to us (kind of like Bethesda's Elder Scrolls Construction Set). I am currently too excited to go looking for the exact post where Chris said that, so I'll have to deviate from my usual modus operandi of providing an exact quote and link to that post, my apologies. I hope I have answered your question satisfactory.Temper wrote:Sorry if this has been asked before but, what is the devs views on consumers editing game files/modding ?

Hi again !
Thanks ArcaneSaint ! Yep fully answered my question on mods mate
Mmmm...The ECS gave years of life to the elderscrolls games.
This game is going to steal so much of my life it's not funny.
The terrible part about this is,instead of playing the game,I'll probably end up spending 95% of my time in the editors.
