Mars one, anyone?

A company supposedly wants to send 23 people to colonize mars. The catch: It is a one-way trip. Hoax, not a hoax, who cares.

Also, the company said it wants to generate money by making the colony a reality show. (And they get to live in an inflatable habitat).

I wouldn't for four reasons:

1). A one way trip = a lifetime contract, and living by the rules of a reality show (forever).
2). Your survival depends on a private company (it would take supplies 6 months to reach the colony)
3). What separates you from mars is a inflatable habitat
4). There are NO toasters in space, what am I going to assassinate?!

(Hoax or not, this reminds me of the first Red Faction game )

Never. Same reasons as yours, Assassin. Except for #4, I have to disagree there. If you don't bring your own toasters to assassinate, that's your fault. But the distance is not just about supplies. In case of an emergency, the only help available would have to come from 22 people who are probably retarded (otherwise they wouldn't be there). And I don't think my girlfriend would be too enthusiastic about it, either. On the other hand, a girl like that whistles and a dozen guys come running, so maybe that wouldn't be much of a problem.

Some of the ambassadors and advisors for this project come from my country (the netherlands) and are well respected scientists with many degrees and also patents etc to their name. So I believe it's possible, just count me out, you have to be absolutely bonkers to do this

Although the second part of your post suggests that you are not serious, I would like to clarify my point. Of course they come from universities, that much is obvious. What I meant was that they may know a hell of a lot about the theoretical background of space exploration, but no one ever actually did it.
If someone studied physics and knows everything about the working principles of an internal combustion engine, I still wouldn't trust him to fix my car.

Also, science is not about why, it's about why not. So they asked "why not go to Mars?", and they were the only ones willing to actually try going to Mars. In short, they were the only ones with the courage to do it.

In space, no one can hear you endorse polygamy and/or swinging. A reality show set in a new isolated colony on a different planet would most certainly have its dirty moments. As such the show would likely grow as the colony population does. But also reality shows don't go on all day. They'd probably write cheesy scripts in their off-time just to keep viewers interested. I think the biggest problem for me would be a lack of entertainment stream. I mean what would I do without an influx of anime and video games? It would probably get to a point where the ONLY form of entertainment is each other. I dunno about you guys but too much exposure to one person typically leads to either hate or love.

Well that's my answer to question 4 "how would you cope with limited entertainment?" My other answers:
1) anyplace can be a home. Being a one-way trip isn't necessarily a problem as long as you find a way to make your home a happy one.
2) eugh... I just dunno about this one. I mean companies are driven by profit, and not all of them have mottos like "do no evil". I mean what do they do if the show and porn popularity start to drop? Do you really think a company would just take care of a colony on another planet forever? Do you think a government would? Unless they managed to get some sort of moisture farm and crop farm growing, I would not feel good about it.
3) yeah... the deadliness of accidents kinda rises in an inflatable environment. If there's some sort of tear, the whole thing de-shapes, and can tear more. A more rigid structure would have slightly less catastrophic failures iI'd think. And easier repairs.

Some companies are known to cut corners or neglect workers. Let me put it this way, In space there is no OSHA,(Occupational Safety and Health Administration), BBB (Better Business Bureau) and there is no "I quit". So the people who enlist better love their boss. (Because if something unethical happens, who is going to stop it?).

If the project is successful, it will definitely be a milestone for space colonization.

I think the biggest problem with the "Mars one" is going to be as they say "takeoff & landing".
Until the Space elevator off the coast of Australia is finished getting anything into space cost's something like 100 million US.
Sending supplies to Mars and additional occupants is going to be a huge cost as whatever is used to send these needs to takeoff then land & takeoff then land again every trip.
Building a vessel that can do 2 takeoffs will cost alot more than 200 million US.

IMO they need to wait for the Space elevator to be finished, and thats only due for construction around 2020 (takes alot more than 3 years for something that big to be built).

Edit: yes i would go, as i believe we need to test such things to better science & humanity.
We wont ever get whats in the bottom of the Deep sea or colonize other planets if we dont start trying somewhere.
Only the strong survive, to think we are the most advanced species in the universe is ignorance.

Damn, that is spectacular looking. An interesting possible location. I still think it is going to be a long way off though. but the possibilities are endless if they manage to pull it off.
