I am aware of the bug where sometimes you build walls and they have no pathfinding data generated for them, so characters are walking through them as if they aren't there.

I need help finding the cause. I can't make it happen myself, so I would like everyone who has had the bug to remember, in as much detail as possible, when it could have happened.

For example, did you build the wall, and it immediately had no pathing?
Or did you build it and it worked fine, but broke after you moved away and came back, or after you saved and loaded your game, or did you import your game?

I need detailed steps, if we can gather this information from lots of people then a pattern may emerge.

Hello,
Here's my version of the wall bug, btw this happened on the first days of the wall release so I may have forgotten something. So I fortified my base and I noticed that when my workers were assigned with a task they had to go first to the gate and then to their task. Apart from that I had no other pathfinding issue. Also the gate opened and closed fine. I didn't try anything to fix it, there was no reason. That was the first game after the update. The second I think went with no issues at all. The third on the other hand was a total mess. I couldn't move anyone close to the walls and gate, neither from the inside nor from the outside. I restarted the game a couple of times but it didn't work, i also deleted some walls and the gate, that didn't work too. The forth time after 2-3 days i had no problems and even today that i checked i still got no issues with the walls.
That's everything i can remember, hope it helps.

P.S haven't checked the forums  but when i select the "import squad" on the game menu and press esc the game always crashes.

Hi Chris,

Walking through walls bug for me happened straight away after building, i made a fairly long walls and it only happened on 2/3 sides, was fixed by ctrl shift F11 however with the gate included pathing errors remained such as running to the gate between jobs etc. Currently running with no gate and after quite a few ctrl shift F11's i managed to get my guys moving about inside fine.

Slightly related but a while ago i saw a request for something to reliably replicate the stuck character bug, i'm not entirely sure whether the way i'm replicating it is unrelated to the original stuck character bug or if its wall related but here it is anyway:

Bug-Stuck character

build gate, dismantle gate, stuck.

normally happens to character dismantling the gate however i've also noted up to 10 other chars being stuck from this. With this other chars than the dismantler who gets stuck completely, have movement inhibited, i.e. click to move, take one step and go back to aimless, repeat in any direction works so its not stuck in the traditional sense however again only way to fix is to pick them up and put them back down.

Bug-Stuck Character (old bug)

get one guy to walk in circles around a mountain(impassible terrain) have as many others as available follow him as spread out as possible, this has got one of my guys stuck a few times although its not overly reliable to reproduce, i tried to for the purposes of this post to replicate this and did manage once in a 10min run.

Hope this is of help, and good luck

Ham.

2 instances, 1 working.

1st, Non-working.

-Started with LAYING OUT a (BASIC)wall, arrows out, was amazed at how walls connected in a series of placements, finished with 7 different turning sections terminating in an area to house a gate section. Instantly noticed everyone was walking through the layout section (hereby referred to as foundation).

-As wall was being erected, set up foundation for the gate.

-Finished gate before walls were done constructing, foundation was still passable, as were completed sections of wall.

-Finished walls, unable to close gate FROM INSIDE without the gate closer unlocking within a second. Closing from outside produced no problems.

-Characters reference the gate as an entrance/exit point REGARDLESS of destination.
e.g.-1 Character moving from farm to well. Must run past well, touch gate, run back to well, grab water, run back to gate, back to farm.
e.g.-2 Long move order given from inside compound to town visible on horizon. Character reaches town, click character, click to enter weapon shop. Character runs back down to outpost, touches base with gate, runs back up to town to enter shop.

-Houses become un-enterable unless closing door and opening again. Characters perpetually working indoors (researcher) unable to leave without being dragged out by another. Also building remains "darkened" while said researcher is inside.

-Attempt to move everyone a good distance away (around 5 klicks by recollection) and ctrl+shft+f11. Produces freezing for approx. 1 min until resumes. No changes in pathing. Walls still passable>

-Attempt to knock down walls after much rage. Results in characters freezing in place, unable to move, bodies not healing, characters frozen in bed/job.

RESTART

2nd, working.

-Waiting until concrete wall researched. Gate foundation set first, (DEFENSIVE)wall foundation laid based upon gate, as close to 4 sides as I could manage. Noticed characters UNABLE to pass through walls. HOWEVER, builder unable to enter through gate foundation to reach materials inside compound. Other workers assigned to task. Gate completed, passable. Walls remain impassable.

-Walls completed, impassable, gate passable, gate does not remain closed, everyone and their mother makes it their mission to open that f*****g door. Buildings occasionally become unenterable until door closed/opened again. researcher stuck inside unless dragged out.

-Not even gonna bother with ctrl+shft+f11 as its working well enough.

As requested by User because they didn't want to create a account here to post it

well am too lazy to make accounts and post it myself but if you could do me the favor of posting the comment try these simple steps.
1. gather 6 to 7 characters 4 that build the wall and the rest can do anything else.
2.build the walls near a town, where many travellers as well as bandits will most likely pass by.
3.after building the walls, making ovbiously an enclosure as if making a fortress you should have your full barricade defending your town.
4.close your doors so that way no bandits can get INSIDE THE TOWN YOU MADE.
5.either order your 4 characters to walk outside and they should either find the walls that do not work (because they will glitch into it or will walk through it just like that) or just wait for bandits/neutral factions to pass throught the glitched walls.

Ok so I was replying to someone else cause of their wall problem, so bear with me as I copypasta myself. Feel like it'd be better placed here. And yes i'm lazy so walla:
"Ok so I've been fidgeting with walls a crap ton cause it always bugged me with the gate and blah blah.

So, my findings. If you want to keep the gate locked, make one guy incredibly heavy (backpack or a dead body) and then have a faster character close the door. If you HOLD RIGHT CLICK it will override their attempt to unlock the gate and screw everyone over. Now, you have them all right clicked and the slow guy as far away from the gate as possible. Now tell the heavy guy to move with one click, he'll auto switch to unlocking the gate. Since someone is already performing the task of screwing ev- I mean unlocking the gate, your other guys will listen to you. Tell them to do whatever, auto tasks is the best, then hold right click the heavy guy. Sacrifice one guy, but walla. Safety within walls and no one trying to unlock the gate.

It's only a temporary fix for now, but it has saved me a lot of workers as I can set guards outside to deal with bandits.

Also, my guess as to why your workers don't fight bandits outside if the gate is locked... is because I think there may be a script telling them to NOT unlock the door for the bandits lol. It's listed in the update on the main page for Kenshi. Thus the need for some capable guards for outside the gate. Hold right click them and they won't unlock the gate but will fight. Hope this helps till the gate bug is resolved"

In my experience I made the walls first THEN the gate. Till the walls were finished, they were ALL passable. Regardless of where. It is my observation that the gate is the catalyst. Gate up, walls impassable (of course everyone tries to unlock the gate, but I mentioned my temporary fix for that above). Gate torn down, everyone becomes Kitty Pryde....

-Edit-
Forgot to mention that if you do not properly attach the walls to your gate (which I found to be rather interesting, maybe having the wall shorten itself to fit to the gate would be helpful) it counts as if you are not enclosed and it's Shadowcat all over the place. So 3 test towns (which was REALLY frustrating since like... Idk. The whole world of Kenshi was against me, even with a crew of 10 guarding my builders there was nonstop dust bandits and *shudder* jonins.) Anyways, if the walls are correctly attached to the gate the walls work properly. A somewhat simpler way to make an enclosed area is wall, gate, then make a new chain of walls on the other side of the gate and somehow manage to make it fit...

-Edited Edit-
Should mention these were all level 1 walls, never really got around to trying the second level walls. Also, ramps float WAAAAAAAAAAAY up in the air. Just. Thought I'd mention that.

Chris, Kenshi in the steam does not update to version 0.46. Be kind to correct or tell Valve about this problem.

Gorkon, try restarting Steam and relaunching Kenshi, mine has updated without problem.

Unfortunately, i have had all the above occurrences. One odd thing, is that it seems that some sections can have "ghosting", but others do not.

For a time i did the ctrl shift f11 after every completed wall, but not for each completed section......

As for if it was immediate after construction, or after load, its hard to tell unless enemies try to attack immediately after the wall is built.

I have noticed that most of the occurrences of ghosting have occurred when i built the wall attached to a mountain, or was walling in a mountain path.

I can confirm that walls placed such that they border impassable terrain that are subsequently DELETED will prevent character movement as if the wall still exists.

This occurred in 0.45 and is still occurring in 0.46.1

do you still have the savegame file associated with it?
and if the problem still persists even after reloading the game, can you please upload it so Chris can take a look at it?
Thanks

First you have to zip the quick save game file. note it can not be larger than 2 megs, thats the max the forums support. then to upload here you have to click "Add the File" once you uploaded it from the Upload Attachment tab below the input panel where you type out your message.

AHHHH!!! I had to zip it first!!! man do i feel stupid now.

here is the save. Some of the squad are knocked out, because they were jumped by enemies that ran thru the wall. The corpses should still be there. Let me know if there are any problems.

As you can tell, the wall is huge.

I noticed that the walls worked properly after i had build a ramp to one of them, my characters weren't walking through the walls anymore.
hope it helps ^^

I play the game via steam. One thing i am discovering is that when it starts acting buggy(crashing or just being weird), when i check the "integrity of the game cache" under the local files tab in properties, Steam usually detects a problem and re-downloads the files. I assume that somehow the files are becoming corrupt, but i do not know if this is because of: It not downloading properly, steam, the game, or something else on my computer.

I bring this up because for a while the walls on my new base were doing what they were supposed to. Then i noticed some ghosting occurring(but not as bad as in the past), and other strange things: guys magically ending up on top of the walls, random crashes. I re-checked the file integrity, steam tells me that 2 files are missing, then re-downloads the missing files, and the problems go away for a while.

I hope this helps.

The third on the other hand was a total mess. I couldn't move anyone close to the walls and gate, neither from the inside nor from the outside. I restarted the game a couple of times but it didn't work, i also deleted some walls and the gate, that didn't work too.
