If you are attacked without being the target of the attack, you still become a criminal and then get a bounty if you escape.

Example: A Group of Holy Paladins attack a wandering pack of dogs, you get hit by one of the paladins while attempting to help them kill the dogs. Now you are a criminal.

Huh, they shouldnt be able to friendly fire/damage you unless they are already hostile to you. Are you sure you weren't wearing a stolen part of their uniform or someone else's uniform or something?

Confirmed.

Happened to me with a character near Blister Hill. Went into sneak to build up my stealth skill and one of the paladins while fighting wild dogs near there some how flagged me with a 500 credit bounty for 17 hours when it hit me but did zero damage.

As for the person above, all equipment I use is manufactured by my own group as this group is over 170 hours old, it's all top of the line gear.

I have been similarly provoked to react - my team and Holy Empire troops get simultaneously swamped by hungry bandits - a Paladin swings and clips one of my guys, who retaliates and earns himself a bounty In the process. In my experience, my troops are responding to the friendly fire.

There is no friendly fire in Kenshi. Something is tripping a hostility flag that flags you for weapon attacks. Could be you attacked a bandit unprovoked, and in the world of Kenshi, that seems to be all that matters. Doesn't matter if you're "helping" or not. You committed a crime for attacking someone that isn't attacking you. Even though that rule is overridden by holy nation it seems. They can do whatever the fack they want.

Watch when your guy swings a weapon - he will occasionally connect with two or more targets if they are clustered. Sometimes this will mean that you strike a neutral target that you had no intention of hitting. Granted, not technically friendly fire, but essentially the same thing. Neutral parties can do the same (clipping one of your squad in the brawl), which causes your squad members to retaliate automatically.

They actually can't. You cannot hit a neutral party. The ONLY way you can hit someone is if a hostile flag has been tripped somewhere in the chaos. It's a sensitive trigger, and can be tripped by a lot of things, but there is no way to hit a friendly or neutral target just because they're in your weapon's swing. that flag MUST have been tripped by something... It's just usually impossible to tell what it could have been.

Hey Zeal, thanks for the info. I've just managed to recreate the exact same scenario with four of my group, a Paladin, and some bandits. To begin with, the Paladin is fighting alongside me, and then my main character clipped him with his saber as he was downing a bandit. The Paladin immediately flags as hostile. I wish I could show you video footage of how it pans out, but I did manage to grab a couple of screen shots (attached). Surely this would lead to the tripping of the hostile flag you mentioned?

I had considered the fact that having a Skeleton in the group might have acted as a trigger - however, the Paladin was not chasing me down to attack, his goal is designated as "following and talking". In addition to this, the Skeleton is a recent recruit, and the situation has occurred a number of times before.

I'm only going on my personal experience, although it is fairly easy to replicate, should you wish to try it yourself. Whether I'm right or wrong, I would be keen to understand what is causing it.

The skeleton is likely your flag there then. They are by default hostile towards non human races, but the attack doesn't always ensue until dialogue is either concluded or something interrupts it. You're already hostile with them, but the following and talking places the hostility in a dormant state until the dialogue is concluded or interrupted. I have the same issue with my female character until i've cleared the dialogue reassuring them that i'm a follower of Okran. Then I can fight by them all i want without this happening.

Basically, the key there is that you by default have a hostile flag with them already, and they are "on the fence if you're hostile or not". The dialogue is a chance to clear the flag, and once it's cleared, your attacks will no longer hit them.

I can't say whether or not it's supposed to be this way, or if there is a bug involved during that time though, but I can tell you that that is likely your issue here. Play as a male human character only, and you can swing around all day around them and never have this issue.

There's not even a dialogue flag to clear skeleton aggro, holy nation despises them more than any other race, so they are already are hostile as soon as they see it. Skeletons are the only race holy nation patrons will attack in the wild without dialogueing with. Sheks, hivers, etc will only be attacked walking into a holy nation town in my experience, and women and scorchlanders will be tested for reverence.
