this is weird. Can you check none of the folders in /kenshi/ are set to "read-only" and also try running it as admin

Every folder in Kenshi is set to read only. How do I get them to not be?
And do you mean launch Steam in administrator then run kenshi? Or launch Kenshi some other way? Running Steam as administrator didn't make a difference.

the only other option's is to delete Kenshi.
uninstall steam, then reinstall it into a "non" program files (x86) file path
reinstall kenshi and set up into a non OS core drive if you don't have one then make sure it's in a different path then program files (x86)
say like c:\games\steam , steam will make the rest of the folders it requires.

I also don't understand what I'm supposed to be gathering from that folder permissions link? Very convoluted, I'm unsure which part was supposed to be relevant to me.

If you are still having issues with folder permissions then you need to contact microsoft support, they will be better able to help you.
sorry but as the Dev said, this is a microsoft issue. we can't help you on it except for what information the Devs said already and what else was provided by others.

We do hope they can help you better and get the issues worked out.

We all know microsoft isnt going to do anything to help me with this ONE game having this issue. If it were a microsoft issue wouldn't all the games be doing that? It seems like it's an issue with the game to me. Not trying to be rude, I am just incredibly frustrated... is it to late to get a refund for the game? I feel like I wasted my money at this point. It doesn't seem worth it to sit on hold with MS for an hour for them to tell me they can't do anything.

In all honestly, I think maybe the developers need to be the ones contacting Microsoft so they can actually fix their game so that it runs on Windows properly. If I was to call them I would have no idea what to even say!
"Hi, I'm calling about some game you've likely never heard of that wont run properly on my computer because of some file permissions error." makes me sound like a lunatic.

I beta tested windows 10 for like a year before it came out, they do indeed listen. all you have to do is file a report on their support page. you might not see an instant response but you will eventually get one.

Correct you are not a programer, Captain Deathbeard and someone are and they both said it's a windows issue.
I have seen the file permission error on other game forums recently. it's not just you or Kenshi, or video games.

We have offered ways to try and get your issue fixed, the fact that everyone else got the issue fixed after we explained how and you havnt is defiantly perplexing. but there is a history of this issue throughout windows family lineup.

as for a refund, you would have to talk to Steam or what service you used to buy the game. but if you have more than 2 hours of gameplay you most likely will not get one.

Aside from installing the game somewhere else, which I did. What can I do?
It says that I have full permissions, yet when I untick read only it says i dont have permission. So WHAT do I need to do? Why do I need to call MS? If everyone else was able to do it on your directions.... why cant you give me directions? Not a link that makes no sense and is for a verision of windows im not even running... In the security tab it says that I (the administrator) have full access. Yet I cant remove the read-only. So.... what can I do?

And IF i absolutely have to deal with the nightmare of trying to communicate to someone with broken english at microsoft after sitting on hold for 3/4 of my life.... what in the world am I supposed to tell them? Can you give me a script or something so I don't sound like a whackjob?

What version of Windows do you use? Can you post a screenshot of your security tab with your account selected? Even better yet, a screenshot of the ADVANCED security settings page for Kenshi folder?

Seems to me that the key problem here is the choice to store save game data in Program Files rather than in the user directory. This same choice makes it difficult for multiple users on a single PC (for example, me and my kids) to play the game w/o permission issues.

I imagine that you could avoid these issues by saving games to %userprofile%\documents\my games\ kenshi instead of the installation directory.

You'd avoid these permission errors and also unblock multi-user systems.

Can that be a solution?

then i suggest you reply to that link explaining your issues. tell them the steps you went over. you can even link back to this page for purpose of them seeing what's going on. also tell them how you got win 10. was it an upgrade? was it a clean install. i know there are issues with upgrading from older versions of windows that cause issues in win 10.

You can even go farther than that and click the link on the side that says Still have questions? Ask the community. you will need to login to your MS account to proceed. but then you can put down everything that's going on so your question is more suited to your issue. link back to everything that's been shown in how you were suggested to fix your issue.

I'm not sure why windows is tagging it as read-only. Kenshi has absolutely zero control over setting things to read-only, so I don't know where it is coming from.
Was it 100% a complete re-install, not moving the old installation across? Do you run Windows with an administrator account? Are any other games in your steam folders marked as read-only?

I meant directly running the kenshi_x64.exe as admin, outside of Steam. But I doubt it will help in this case, if the whole folder is set to read-only.

Makes sense.
As for me, my Kenshi folder always was read only, same as most other, and I never had any problems with permissions. And my active windows profile(which is administrator) has full control, according to permissions settings.

BUT

I was able to get it to work once again by starting in safe mode and deleting all of the auto saves and the current folder.
However, last time I did this (when it was in program files) it started doing it again and I decided to move steam.

My version of windows came on my computer, bought brand new in April of this year.

When I reinstalled steam I completely fresh reinstalled it after removing the old one the way it said to in the Steam forums. I reinstalled all of my games one by one. None of the other games are marked as read-only just Kenshi.

I'll be honest, I think it's strictly an issue with the autosave feature and windows together. They're not playing nicely. But none of my other games with autosave features have this issue. But what do I know, I'm not a developer obviously. I'll also add that I have 200 hours of playtime, and was having NO issues until my first post. Was there any major changes to the autosave part of the game? Just a thought... I played for awhile without an issue.

I'd really rather not of have to start up in safe mode and delete folders anytime I want to play. Seems a tad insane. I'd like to figure out how to get Kenshi to work properly without that.

I did the add "everyone" and "all" and it didnt make a difference so I deleted them because I wasnt sure if it would make my computer unsecure or not. When it was set that way nothing changed.
"all" add something about applications and "everyone" added a user called everyone? I cant remember. But Kenshi was still acting like that when I did that. I was just worried that the all applications thing would give me viruses or something ><

Well I didn't add it manually, it was there with the initial Windows setup so I doubt it's something that will compromise your security. You could have tried to restart your PC after adding "Everyone" principal, and/or reinstall Kenshi. Also disabling the User Account Control might work, or adding Kenshi folder to exceptions of your antivirus, though I have no problems with either on. Frankly, at this point, I've no idea why is it so hard to get it to work on your PC. Usually in these cases I reinstall Windows. Which works. Except when it doesn't :3

My computer is brand new though lol I feel like i JUST got everything installed on it and I dont really want to have to do that again for no reason. I also was never given a disc or anything for the Windows thats on here so I'm not even sure how.

Like I said I got it working by deleting the current folder and all autosaves while in safe mode. BUT the problem is, once I start playing it again, those idiotic folders pop up once more and I have to do that all over again. Every single time. I also cannot resave over a previous save, I have to make up a new name for it. There has to be a way to make it so that the autosaves and current folder dont do that. I mean you'd think...
