The Faction Relations system reached peak brokenness for me when I got attacked at the Anti-Slavers HQ for being allied to the Slave Traders. I was allied to the Slave Traders because I bought and freed a ton of slaves. Moreso I'm allied with the Outlaws for all the ones I freed. The Slave Traders don't even help defend against attacks or anything. I have around 80 relations with them, which is going to be difficult to set back.

The website says you can be a peacekeeper, diplomat, etc but you can't even be allies with two factions who are enemies of each other. I suggest mixing sincerity and betrayal into it. Perhaps I could bring them a captured slaver to prove that I'm on their side. Or perhaps I could bring them the shackles of a bunch of slaves I freed.

On the other hand, Starving Bandits. They attack demanding food, and if I am unable to let them down my people to loot them, they hate me for it. I don't even have the option to give them food. I drop delicious meals on the ground and they ignore it. They attack me so often that I get a net negative, even with the occasional guy I am able to give 1500 Cats (whom I also cannot give food - "nothing to give" my ass), and even healing and feeding every Starving Bandit I come across. Raiders wake up, full, in a comfy bed, surrounded by walls, and they respond by immediately attacking me because there was no button to surrender when they first attacked. At the very least, let me set food stores and animal feeders to public so I can place them outside the walls for them.

Another thing, does feeding the hungry even do anything? Does bringing someone whose bleeding to death to safety in my town's bar? Hospitality doesn't seem to affect relations. I'd definitely be damn grateful if someone gave me a full suit of armor and an awesome sword, for free, while I was healing in their bed.

Hand outs to the hungry bandits and healing them does work, but only a little bit at a time. And only when you are neutral to them. Since you are talking bout when you are strong, you likely already made them hostile to you in the early game. Which is why it's so hard to win them back now.
I only have one game where I'm still neutral to the hungry bandits. And that was because I never fought back when I was weak. I just ran away or got beaten down and healed them when they got beaten by others.

I agree I would like them to be a little more appreciative when I give them hand outs. But lets face it, it doesn't help IRL, why should they appreciate it in game.

Reading that back, I get that I sound sore about it. But really, I just don't want to invest the time and effort when whyever I was banned in the first place may result in me wasting this time and effort too.

Starving (Hungry) Bandits are one of the most dialogue heavy factions, in that, much of their interactivity relies on random chance and specific circumstances. It seems that they carry the chance to attack a player through various means, even in spite of positive relations. Here's a pic of a portion of their dialogue options, there's a lot of approaches they can take towards a squad they see.

As to the Slave Traders, while they have a -100 relations with the Anti-Slavers, they don't carry any specific specific assaults or base visits that would assist you in any meaningful way out in the world. The same would be found with a Trader's Guild alliance, however, allying the UC would provide the opportunity for squads to arrive and assist. Certain factions carry certain mechanics, while other potentially parallel or subfactions don't necessarily carry the same abilities as the parent "major" faction. Think of the UC as the military and police and the TG+ST as the commerce and business end.

I feel you :D

This reminds me of when I first took down one of the 2 Holy Nation guys, the ones just below the Phoenix. Together with some inquisitors, I kept them in cages in holy mines I had captured. I freed them from their cages only to use them as training dummies, equipping them with the worst hackers I could find. I gave my guys also the worst weapons of their classes, so I could have really long fights with them. When they passed out, I locked them up again. So they were basically my training slaves. Still, the game rewarded freeing them more than it punished locking them up, causing my relations to go from -100 to somewhere +20.

Edit: On second thought, it probably was not just freeing them from the cages, but also giving them first aid so I could fight them again ;)
