The best they have done is some basic, very thin tissues like skin and possibly another thin organ that I can't remember. Hearts, livers, kidneys, etc are too thick and require blood flows to every cell at once and so they simply cannot grow them yet despite decades of work.
Thank you for correcting me on this matter :). I see that while we're able to create the cells necessary for a heart, configuring them into the necessary shape is still rife with complication.

Anyways, the ideas being brewed up here remind me of the movie Repo Men, where a company would sell artificial organs to people, but if they couldn't pay they'd repossess the organs straight from them. Perhaps there could be some sort of Repo Men faction? That'd be interesting.
Guess it's a bit like organ transplants, when you think about it. Face transplants would definitely be creepy...
In a savage world, of course, people tend to disregard what's disgusting in order to survive (you mightn't want to have someone else's arm, but you really want that second arm).

Depends on how dependable the slave trade is, the demand for organs, and how available facilities for transplanting organs are. There could easily be a faction that deals with that sort of biology. Though, I'd think they'd want their money upfront.

Perhaps we could just run with the idea that everyone looks the same? So, we are all clones hence no rejection of organs or limbs. One man's missing arm is literally another man's extra arm. Someone cuts your arm off so you go cut someone else'e off and use that and the merry-go-round goes round.

Let's not forget that there will be research in this game. That means progress. That means new inventions. At some point in a world full of sword wielding maniacs some enterprising young genius is going to start selling limb replacements. Perhaps a purely mechanical limb that uses leftover mono-filament wire and lots of tiny pulleys? Perhaps a hydraulic leg that shifts balance points so that it always remains upright? Steampunk has been mentioned in this thread but I wouldn't want boiling water in my leg while running around the damned desert. Robotics? Easy. Off the shelf chips and electrical actuators. Any good post apocalyptic setting involves scavenging old tech and re-purposing it for survival. We are pretty close to having high resolution EEG headbands now why wouldn't a future world have that? Off the shelf wireless communications chips from a discovered cache, old recycled electronics and a video game controlling headband you found in a old half buried apartment complex, ta-da!, you have a new arm.

Seriously, people, the only complaints I'm reading are that robotics don't fit the setting. A good imagination and a solid internal logic are all that is needed here and we can have our low-tech weapons and high tech body parts at the same time.

P.S.- Also for a cool mechanical power source look into Paolo Bacigalupi's The Windup Girl. The story features mechanical springs that are contained in portable boxes that can be attached to anything that needs a wheel turned. People wind them up using a bicycle and all that energy is stored in the springs to be released later like a battery. Totally mechanical, nothing burned, no chemistry. Windup spring loaded rifles anyone?

When ever someone mentions that movie I have to be reminded of the fact that it's a direct rip off of a rock opera staring Anthony Head and Paris Hilton...

So I seem to have missed the part where the setting stopped being an alien planet colonized by humans before some sort of apocalyptic disaster made them lose their technology... I always thought the world was best compared to Trigun... Without the guns... And super beings.

It IS a steampunk game technically. It wold add more realism and it allows a new group to be founded that only allowed people with robotic limbs. Also, when I loose a limb, this won't just repalce it, it will be something I will ahve to fight against to get used to it and be back to normal in my daily activities and it may be more efficient.

Think of it from a gameplay perspective. It would absolutely suck to have a character that can't fight just because he got both arms and a leg chopped off. If there weren't robotic placements, then I'd rather resort to modding the game files or quicksaving-quickloading to keep from having a useless character. Robotic limbs means more options means more immersive means more fun.

Oh! How about this:

Cheap robotic limbs aren't too expensive, you can get them early in the game. However, they're also not very good... so your sword skills and such will suffer.

You can get higher quality robotic, prosthetic and perhaps biological limbs for more money.

I thought the point was, it's partly a steampunk game, but there's no coal. So no black-powder (no guns), no steam-engines, no large foundries and so on. Batteries, Electricity, Windfarms, robotics, the small/side-lined stuff is all you get, and it's just sweetness imho.

Now that makes me think that it'd be really cool if you could invent things like railroads.

Now I'm imagining a high tech medical facility run by some creepy faction who will buy fallen enemies for cheap and use them for "spare parts" and R&D.

I think cybernetic parts will be cool and I think limiting ranged weapons to a tech lower than that will not be a big deal. It will be fun and stylish.

Yeah, not everything has to be realistic. I mean, look at zombies. They're like, the most popular thing ever and there is basically not a single game that even tries to make them seem scientifically plausible.

Seriously? Every single game I can think of that actually has a cohesive story gives reasons and explanations as to how there is a zombie apocalypse.

I didn't say they don't say "It's some kind of virus." Or some other half assed explanation before getting back to using them as a metaphor for whatever. I said that they don't ever even try to be scientifically plausible. As in explaining why the zombies are driven to consume the flesh of the living (and only the living), or where they get all that energy to sprint indefinitely, or why the don't just fall apart after a few months from natural decomposition, or why there always seem to be more zombies than there were living people to begin with....

The Walking Dead on AMC, Season 1, Episode 6, TS-19 Season Finale. Watch it and look on as your entire argument falls to pieces.

Well besides the point that that's a TV show and therefore irrelevant to my argument about video games, I don't really want to that show just because you think it proves me wrong. I'm not particularly interested in it, so that would really be the only reason, and well, I don't care about this discussion enough for that. If you want to explain it to me though, that'd be cool.

Basically they completely explain what the virus is, what it does, and why people come back. It's also arguably within the realm of scientific plausibility.

I disagree, I think it'd be horrible to remove such an awesome feature because you think its bad and doesn't belong. It's the creators vision. Who are YOU to say that "oohh no guns? Then we cant have cybernetics!!11"

What gives? A lot of us would LOVE some steampunk anime type hack and slash free roam adventure roleplaying game with some tasty "I didn't ask for this." - Adam Jensen, style, GITS, freakin full metal automail action game.

Why would you want to take that away from us? Cuz theres no guns?

Maybe, the mechanics behind fully functional bio-feedback linked arms is easier to manufacture than the development of gunpowder. Or perhaps the need wasn't there after the post apoc event that ruined the world and caused people to head back in time.

Or maybe, a secret, dark organization saught to control the people of the wastes has decided to BAN the firearms, to keep people more in control. Theres a lot the creator can do with this game, and a lot he has not told us about his story....

You know what's a good alternative to guns? AIRguns. They don't require gunpowder so no explosives and we could make them like protable harpoon guns. They could take alot of skill and may need to be set up, but they have a very long range and good accuracy and may be used for ambushes or support.

And that's just it, Harpoon guns are already planned. So if I was the OP I'd just instead suggest the addition of ranged weapons like airguns, single shot air guns, multi shot ones, etc.Blowpipe weapons, etc. Because robotics is mechanical and electric, gun powder is explosive. They're two seperate things.

Well, personally, I don't see whatv could go wrong with suh a featuren but we just need to know the limits: like you can't go Colonel Yarrick(google that) or have spider like legs, that would be way too strange, or would it?
I think we just have to find a way to "justify" how there could be such a thing.
A way of explaining it would be that humanity did collapse(how, does not matter) and that some guys locked in bunkers and lairs some technologies and that we just managed to retrieve these.
It would be awesome to go dungeon raiding against steampunk robots to know how to create replacements...

And as for guns, there is already a thread for that:
