I've played the game a fair bit running around and slicing dudes open and being sliced open, but not much of the base building aspect yet.

What are good places to set up shop? I was thinking of a place with some balance - good for trading but also good for action where you can easily find enemies to fight. I started a new game with the Retired Captain so the Holy Empire hates me, so can anyone offer any suggestions?

And one side question, is there any advantages in trying to take a town over other than the loot? Can you do become the owning faction or somesuch such and is there yet any benefit for it?

Well idk much about choosing one of those already started games.. but if ur an enemy to the romans then you lose a lot of areas.. I wud suggest going default or one of the other ones because when your a noobie all u do is get killed by bandits and run to the nearest town lol... the romans control a shit ton of towns in the northern part of the map and some in the south.

Also to answer your question close to a town but not to close.. if you build it far far away it'll take you forever to take your goods to market. I built mine in the north closer to the free traders outpost.. its about 30 seconds away on full game speed.

There are no Romans.
There is the "Holy Empire". Not the "Holy Roman Empire". They're red, but not Roman.

To answer the actual topic question, build really anywhere you feel like. If you still want enemies, go to the areas close to a faction your enemies with. That way you get attacked by bandits and faction soldiers. More loot, better fights.

But it does have the issue of selling things off.

When I built my first "town", all I really had was a small shack with a chest, bed, and research station. From there, you can build the world.
But many, including myself, would suggest building a stone mine and stone processor, to become self-sufficient in your building materials.
