On the world map, where do you think is the best location to build your town? Right now I've got mine situated to the west-northwest of Brink, about halfway to Catan. I'm worried that I may have placed it in the middle of a bandit route...

personally i think placing your outpost in the middle of a high traffic area is perfect. all your enemies come to you, and when trading is fully implemented the caravans will come right along with everyone else.
it does make for a harder start but it is a lot more fun i think =(^.^)=
but another mostly safe spot i have noticed is on the other mountain top next to Brink.
still get bandits and the like, but seems not as often.

Do you believe the sexes should be equal?
Oh heavens no.
Then Men would become unmanageable

I originally placed my town in a "highway" for bandits thinking it would be fun but you will get sick of it after a while. I would walk away from the PC for about 10 mins and come back to a dead person in front of the research bench and all my men on the minerals playing hide and seek.
Right now I sort of stole someones idea and placed my base in the outskirts of Catan atop a plateau with one way in =D. It's super easy to defend and I can go to sleep at night to have my research and materials gathering while camping my stronger units at the bottleneck in case of bandit raids or Imperial soldiers (Holy sword beginning).
Red rectangles are the entrances...

This is where the plateau is located...

And of course in case I need more room in future updates...

3 more plateaus nearby.

I had close to that too, in the middle of Brink and traders edge, few bandits passed by, lot of merchants pass by even if still not active i know they will be going through a lot there, even if i get bandits i cna deal easy with him by running to one of the citties if i need help, the natural defenses isn t much but helps slightly, and has a police station close in case a bounty comes passing by my village, and a trading post for lot s of sales, and 4 bars for recruits.
It s Hbrown!! Gotta get some pies!
Between Catan and the trader outpost in the mountains, but slightly towards Brink, is a low spot right next to a very small outcropping not much bigger than two houses. I settled there. There's lots of space and I don't get my guys running around all over a plateau edge when an enemy gets close. Enemies usually don't walk right into my area, but I can see them not far away and engage if I wish. Catan's plateau yields some really dumb AI pathfinding.

seems around catan is an easy spot for anyone wanting a safe first base
The world is nothing but an illusion of the mind
I don't like how is the terrain blocked around Catan, and after few tries a found myself settled on a hill above Port South. If you go out of Port South east gate, than turn south, there is direct way to the mountain top. It's pretty near to few towns, big enough, very safe and stylish. I will show some screenshots since i get home
There is a lot of struggles right under. Anytime i want, i can run down, lure some Dust Bandits to Port South and lock the leader into prison.
Right now, i am working on turning my outpost to School of Martial Arts, with a weapon manufacture and Rum distillery.
edit: for bigger image click on it, and in new window, click on it again

Safest place i found so far was a nice big mountain top with only 2 ways up or down. 1 is thru a small town with guards, another is on the side of the mountain bout halfway along the mountaintop.
The town is called Teb something (right of "traders edge" & above "Eyesocket")
I imagine its supposed to be a mountain pass route, but traders just get stuck.
So unless you went with the holy sword start, This is a very safe, extremely large base area. That also gives you a great view

Between Brink and Traders edge, when i had my old town there traders would cross a load of times there, and even take bandits away, if they did not glitch out, when they did would be 2 to 3 groups or traders i na frenetic dance at the edge of my town, and if you more details where too, is next too a small "mountain" if i can call it so, you can see traders edge from it, but not Brink, but once you go up the hill on it s side you can easilly.

Another good place to set up an outpost for trading is, in the cent of the valley south East of traders edge, and south west of Tebooze traders roam around there going to all the city.s

Haven't played kenshi in a while- pff, I haven't played since before the update which introduced all this fancy research and manufacture stuff,
But back to subject-
I put my base down the road from Capitol. No traders, and occasional bandits.

I agree with hbrown: Between Brink and Trader's Edge. I call it Trader's Brink.
- There's trader traffic between the two
- You can turn in any bounties to Brink
However, I did just start a new base in the middle of the valley south of Trader's Edge. I figure with 5 towns around it, trade has to be good. So far, bandits are plentiful. Could be a pro or con.

I tend to start most of my cities in the middle of the northern desert - take a ruler, and connect the dots between Catan, Brink, Clownsteady, Shark, and the traders outpost....and I try to build at the "Crossroads" as I like to put it. However, I usually buy one large house within Catan and set up a research bench inside it and at least one cot, so I can train up through the largest size research bench I can cram into it (usually level 3) and not have to use Mr. Floppy's heal-o-rama. This way, when i finally am able to feel comfortable about venturing out into the great wide open, I have walls already researched up as high as they'll go, and I can build tier 3 stone mines and processors from the outset.
Hope this helps...see you in the Dunes...
