You should put flags and banners into the game. Factions need a way to show themselves in the huge open desert to other factions and traders. Soldiers need to have something to distinguish themselves during a fight, if everyone is running at each other and fighting you don't want to be hit by your own man, especially if a sandstorm comes you won't be able to spare the second it takes to realize if your looking at a friend or foe. An emblem on their armour or someone carrying a flag can prevent any possible mistakes, unless of course an enemy assassin is disguised as an ally and kills your leader in his sleep.
Also it helps with faction cultures and a bunch of other stuff I'll mention later if this idea doesn't get shot down.
Banners and Flags
I'm not gonna shoot it down, but I will say you should check this out Faction Icons: Giving an Identity to Names
Here is some of the other things I had in mind. Merchants and traveling traders would have a specially shaped flag or coloured flag, to show that they are merchants, bearing their own insignia on it.
A flag of truce, or surrender. Before a battle your leader can pull out a universally known flag of truce, and if the enemy leader does likewise the two leaders will be able to negotiate a compromise, set up a duel to decide a victor(instead of having the whole armies fight each other which can be costly), or if nothing can be decided you go to war.
The flag of surrender(white flag) can be raised during a battle to surrender. Surrendering would end the fight and allow you heal your wounded, at the cost of possibly sending men to become prisoners, that is assuming the enemy doesn't just finish you off. But a reason they may want to let you surrender is they don't want to suffer any more casualties.
If a city is being besieged the defenders may want to raise a flag of distress(or a smoke signal) to call back any nearby allies, or you might succeed in calling a bunch of bandits hungry for pillage.
There are a lot of possibilities with flags, if you guys have any ideas say them

My view on this flag could be unique items that could be worn like bags. I'm not sure how "warrior spirit" would work but I suppose since carrying heavy load increase strength and running increase athletics, maybe flags could be use in some way to affect warrior spirit and also endurence. Perhaps like make the rate % of the skill would increase or slow down the loss of endurence. Just like a banner bearer would give resolute to soldiers in battle for example the roman invasion of britain where the eagle bearer jumped to shore causing the fearful legionaires to follow suit.
Since there is mention that a unit have a detection range of an enemy, you could simply add to the function to the detection range of a banner. The banner would have significant effects like increased combat ability, reducing loss of endurence or damage received and even cause fear to the enemy. Not to mention if the person carrying the banner fainted or died it would be a great impact to the group either the enemy or the player themselves giving more depth to tactical gameplay. Small elite group could easily defeat a bigger enemy by taking down the banner bearer/general of their opponent. Imagine a huge battle with you against a large alliance of enemy army and you finish off their general/banner bearer one after another...I wonder what the domino effect would be like...
On matter of design the normal banner might need standard research and resource while legendary or special banner needed special resources like silk or are only acquired from unique location or special quests. For example your faction become dominant and two or more faction decide to ally with you then you could have an alliance leader banner that would also affect soldiers from friendly faction. Adding to the burial function, create enough mound of corpses maybe 500-1000 and you'll unlock the tech to make the butcher banner that cause fear or deep hatred to enemy (it's also a good way to implement traits to a character and hidden tech unlock by seemingly useless action like burying corpses).
Why need research to make banners or flags? Because they are in a way an inspired work of art and cultural discovery in addition as a political statement. From the barbaric heads hanging from a pole to the eagles of rome and the chinese flags with propaganda words written on them like the yellow turban banner. Either they are an obvious thing to do or require a long and deep thought to make.
To expand this even further you could also add other equipment to the bag slot like a bagpipe or an organ grinder that you could deploy in battle...might even make it a weapon like a flare launcher or flame-thrower, there is an endless possibilities of unit type variation which I believe is going off topic of the banners and flags...sorry.

was just thinking when we get wind and stuff having a banner or flag flying would definitely be awesome. could help show windy areas as well. for windmills.
ot long banners across the fronts of large buildings. or your main gates.
or one of my personal favs. a banner from every corner of a building. like the chinese of old had.
or as some said above, have one attached to the back of my characters.
